The world now knows Julie Chen's deepest secret (we think! … JK!), which has either gotta be a big weight off her shoulders, or still terrifying. Luckily, she's opening up about the reveal even more so than when she dropped the bombshell on The Talk!
20 years ago, Julie had plastic surgery to make her look "less Chinese" at the behest of her manager and others with professional input, because they told her that she wouldn't go far in news if she didn't. So she did it, she had surgery to make her "Asian eyes" look bigger for TV!
Here's what the Big Brother host said about the reveal:
"I felt vulnerable and nervous that the haters who hide behind their computers on the Internet would come out and say mean things. And some did. That was expected.
"I was pleasantly surprised by all the supportive emails, tweets, and postings from our show's viewers who are not Asian but told me they understood my story. To them I say thank you."
We can't even imagine how hard this was!
"I chickened out of telling my mom before the show aired what my secret was. I was overwhelmed with love and relief when she sent me an email right after it aired, saying she and my father could not be more proud of me.
"[Back then] we had a long conversation about if it would be denying my heritage. You know, my mom calls one auntie, my father calls an uncle…it spread to my entire family. It divided the family. Members of my family wanted to disown me if I got it done. No one's more proud of being Chinese than I am. And I have to live with the decisions I've made. Every decision I've made…it got [me] to where we are today, and I'm not going to look back."
While we wish she had lived in a time where it wasn't even an idea for someone to have to do this to make it in TV, we're glad that she's able to cope and live with her decision — and we're proud of her for coming forward!
What she did on The Talk was NOT easy, and we respect her for that!
The X-Men: Apocalypse star already discussed how much her body and face changed as she got into fighting shape for her role as Psylocke, but she's definitely got more to say on the matter.
Talking to PeopleStyle, she maintains that the 12 pounds she inadvertently lost during training has loosened her skin:
"As I've tried to get healthier in my life, I've realized there are adverse effects to losing weight. I'm not very tall, so any weight that I had lost changed areas of my skin, like my neck. I could see different parts of my skin didn't feel as, like, tight anymore and I think it's just because it was excess [skin] because of the lost of weight."
Hmm, we don't see it.
Still, Olivia is interested in taking steps to remedy the situation naturally:
