We have some good news, and we have some terrifying news!
The good news is the FDA recently put their heads together and banned three of the four different types of arsenic (roxarsone, carbarsone, and arsanilic acid) from chickenfeed!
Oh, and according to the FDA, there's still one kind (nitarsone) that officials say is A-OK for chickens to eat!!
Sadly, this isn't anything new. In fact, way back in 1940, companies began feeding birdies arsenic compounds in hopes that it would help them grow faster while also curbing their appetite.
It wasn't until 2009 that a petition was filed to remove the chemical from bird feed altogether, and that was pretty much ignored until a lawsuit was filed recently demanding they acknowledge the petition!
The FDA says they will continue says they will continue to monitor the use of nitarsone in chickenfeed for now, but they wont make a decision on whether or not to pull it completely until 2014.
Baby steps, right guys??
In the meantime, we'll probably be staying away from KFC for now!
