This is NOT how we want to finish out our week!
Former Formula One test driver Maria de Villota — an incredible person, and an incredible woman — was found dead today. She was found in her hotel room, and the police are saying it was natural causes… she was only 33 years old.
An autopsy WILL happen, regardless of how the death appears on the surface, though. Just in case.
Maria had a rough past year — a huge crash left her extremely injured, where she had multiple head injuries, was hospitalized for a month, and lost her right eye.
She was the daughter of Emilio de Villota, who raced in F1 from 1976-82. Her family released a statement regarding her death, saying:
"Dear friends: Maria has left us. She had to go to heaven like all angels. I give thanks to God for the year and a half that he left her with us."
Our hearts go out to her family after such an untimely loss, we still can't get past how young she was.
She was an inspiration for many reasons, especially to women entering the sport.
