On one hand, we're very glad to hear that any LGBT visiting/competing/covering the Sochi winter Olympics will be safe from Russia's archaic (yet, rather new) anti-gay laws….
But, on the other hand, this isn't stopping the millions of LGBT citizens in the country from being wrongly terrorized by their own homeland any other time when the Olympics AREN'T there!
Which, unfortunately, is most of the time.
Here's what Vladimir Putin said specifically, though, in an attempt to put out the fire around his nation's upcoming Olympics:
"We are doing everything, both the organizers and our athletes and fans, so that participants and guests feel comfortable in Sochi, regardless of nationality, race or sexual orientation."
How can anyone truly feel comfortable knowing what goes on outside of the games? We, like the rest of the LGBT community, feel for the other proud supporters and members, regardless of where they are in the world!
While athletes and anyone else visiting for the Olympics might be safe from the government, that DOESN'T change the mentality of those who created those awful anti-gay laws and those who support them.
It's still a very awful environment for those in the gay community, be it foreign or domestic, and it will CONTINUE to be until everyone can be treated equally!
