As part of their campaign to win the rights to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, Russia made a pledge to the IOC that the city of Sochi would launch a "Zero Waste" program and make these the cleanest Olympics in history!
Well, just 100 days before the games are set begin, they've already broken their promise!
An illegal landfill dumping operation has been discovered that proves that Russia's state-owned rail monopoly has been unloading tons of construction waste where they're not suppose to!
And authorities now say this dumping ground could contaminate the water that is supplied directly to Sochi!
The Environmental Protection Agency in the area where Sochi is located inspected the Akhshtyr landfill and stated in an official letter:
"[There is] unauthorized dumping of construction waste as well as soil from excavation works."
Russia's $51 billion budget for the Olympics contains no provisions for treating construction waste and these new findings indicate just how little they have done to fulfill their assurance to keep these Games green!
Soooo, if you are planning on attending next year's Winter Olympics, or if you're an athlete who hopes to go for the gold, all we can say is…don't drink the water!
