It's weird when places value sports over the quality of human life — and we've seen it time and time again if football programs standing by their stars instead of giving full attention to the claims from victims of sexual assault.
We've just heard that Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has been under investigation, for almost a year, and is the suspect in a sexual assault case — and yet he's still playing like it's no big deal.
It's a VERY big deal to be under investigation, even if it turns out that he's not guilty.
Here's the story: On December 7, 2012, a woman filed a sexual assault complaint with the Tallahassee PD, and alleges that sexual assault happened under "physical force." Alcohol was involved, and the alleged motive was sexual gratification.
Someone called the police at 4:01 am, evidence was collected and physical trauma was documented.
Law enforcement sources confirm Winston IS their suspect, but there needs to be proof of forced penetration — and the investigation is apparently still ongoing.
A rep for Florida State University issued a statement saying:
"We are aware of a matter that was investigated by the Tallahassee Police Department almost a year ago. Because the investigation has not been closed by TPD, we cannot comment further at this time. We look forward to a speedy resolution of the issue. There is no change in Jameis Winston's status."
His status should be "not playing while under investigation for sexual assault."
While everyone is innocent until proven guilty, we're not saying Winston should be thrown in jail while the case is still open. We're saying that maybe a major university should appear to be giving the proper weight to claims like this — which are extremely serious.
And if he DID do it, well, then the world gets to keep watching him play a sport while cops wrap things up. How would that make the victim feel?
How would that make YOU feel?
