This is just awful.
A snowboarder, who was spending his Thursday in a high risk area outside of a Wyoming mountain resort, triggered an avalanche while boarding downhill — and unfortunately he didn't make it out. He was only 29 years old.
His name was Michael Kazanjy, and it was the first fatal avalanche of the season.
"It was a big slide. It happened in a cliff area. It was a very steep slope."
More than one person tried to save Michael's life — including a doctor who knew CPR. It was a high-risk area in the backcountry. It's more exciting there, but WAY more dangerous.
Here's what Michael's brother said:
"Mike lived life with a full heart for those around him, and they for him. He loved his family, his Cal Bears, his skiing buddies and San Francisco. My parents were lucky enough to spend this Christmas with Mike in Jackson this past week, and are grateful for it. This tragic loss at a time of year when families draw close to each other is a reminder to cherish the time we have with our loved ones. Reach out to yours and tell them you love them."
Absolutely. We TOTALLY agree with that.
It's so sad, but it's also hopefully a reminder to live with an open heart, not knowing when you might lose someone you truly care about. Not just on the slopes, either, even though an average of 28 people die every year in avalanches.
Just be careful out there!
