How is it possible that something so sweet, so amazing, and so loving could EVER give way to controversy??
Somehow, it has… again!
Cheerios has brought back their adorable biracial family for another commercial — this time, for the Super Bowl. The first time around it stirred some deep-seeded bigotry in the nation, and it looks like the second time around isn't much different!
The RNC called for a BOYCOTT of the network, in addition to the MSNBC employee that was already fired, because the employee used the official MSNBC Twitter to say that the right wing conservatives probably wouldn't like the commercial while everyone else did!
But is it really that "outrageous and unacceptable" as they claim, or are they just being the normal amount of reactionary that they usually are?
It might've been in bad taste, but isn't the loss of the job enough? Why call for a boycott?
Here's what MSNBC said:
"We immediately acknowledged that it was offensive and wrong, apologized, and deleted it. We have dismissed the person responsible for the tweet. I personally apologize to Mr. Priebus and to everyone offended. At MSNBC we believe in passionate, strong debate about the issues and we invite voices from all sides to participate. That will never change."
Here's what the Tweet said:
"Maybe the rightwing will hate it, but everyone else will go awww: the adorable new #Cheerios ad w/biracial family."
Nobody can deny that when the first ad debuted, there was a social media eruption with vitriolic, racist comments. A lot of that peanut gallery probably did align with the RNC.
It still wasn't right to tweet it out!
The RNC chairman responded, a bit overreacting, saying:
"With increasing frequency many of your hosts have personally denigrated and demeaned Americans — especially conservative and Republican Americans — without even attempting to further meaningful political dialogue."
Luckily, they accepted the apology, saying:
"We appreciate Mr. Griffin’s admission that their comment was demeaning and disgusting, and the Chairman accepted his apology. [We] will aggressively monitor the network to see whether their pattern of unacceptable behavior actually changes. We don’t expect their liberal bias to change, but we will call them out when political commentary devolves into personal and belittling attacks."
As long as they monitor themselves too, like anyone should, we're cool with all this!
In the end though, it's all absurd. It's just an adorable commercial — which everyone can watch (above)!
