Man Charged More Than $89,000 For $750 Worth Of Snake Venom And 18-Hour Hospital Stay!

man charged 81000 dollars for snake bit venom

We're no math experts, but something definitely doesn't add up here!!

Last year, Eric Ferguson and his wife Laura rushed to the Lake Norman Regional Medical Center after he suffered a snake bite on his foot!

The 54-year-old North Carolina native was treated with 4 doses of anti-venom, and after an 18-hour stay in the emergency room he found himself face-to-face with a $89,227 bill, and more than $81,000 of it went towards the anti-venom!!

Obviously the couple felt as though they were severely overcharged, so they went online and did a little research only to find the medicine was actually in the price range of $750-$12,000!

So where did the extra $87,000 go? The hospital released a statement on the situation, saying:

"Hospitals only collect a small percentage of our charges, or ‘list prices.’ We are required to give Medicare one level of discount from list price, Medicaid another, and private insurers negotiate for still others. … If we did not start with the list prices we have, we would not end up with enough revenue to remain in operation. … Our costs for providing uncompensated care are partially covered by higher bills for other patients. In some cases, Lake Norman Regional’s charge is considerably higher than other local hospitals."

After the Blue Cross' discount, Lake Norman Regional dropped the price to the not-so-cheap grand total of $20,227 and the couple STILL had to pay $5,400 to cover their deductible!

Luckily, Eric was able to pay the bill and even says the treatment he received was "beyond phenomenal," however, Laura still questions whether the prices are totally ethical:

"What if it was someone that didn’t have the resources to research and didn’t have insurance? What is fair and equitable here?"

Starting in June, North Carolina hospitals are going to have to make their procedure prices available to the public, which will hopefully make things a bit easier for the consumers, or in this case, the snake-bitten!

Until then, residents might want to avoid snakes at all costs!

Glad Im in Canada where health care isn't only for the rich. Those who criticize us haven't a clue how it actually works up here its much better than Obamas mess of a plan.

Re: WTF – The Republicans made the mess. The plan was strong before they fought every single word of the law.

In Canada all we do is pay a tax and the hospitals are paid for. Because the government does all the purchasing they can set up amazing purchasing agreements with a single company for lets say Bandaids so every bandaid in ever hospital comes from one company. Because the purchase order is for a gazillion bandaids the price ends up being way lower than anything you could ever buy off the shelf or even on a single hospital purchasing agreement. This drives health care costs down significantly!
We still pay for our health care but its never going to bankrupt us or leave us for dead. Sometimes you have to wait for non-emergency procedures but I like that over claiming bankruptcy or simply dying because im to afraid to go to the hospital and become broke.

Instead of spending billions to create wars, bombs and weapons, the U.S. Government should consider revising its priorities. At least if its citizens are actually their number one priority?

Re: Fuckerman – Your name suits you. Health care isn't free, typical Rethuglican response. Someone pays for it - either the person covered or the government in the form of taxes. Insurance companies are the ones out of line here. The hospital had to jack up it's price so high just to get $20,000. Next time, read the article before you make dumbass comments like this.

America has the craziest health care system. In New Zealand all public hospital treatments are free. We don't have snakes over here but if we did that life saving medicine would have been free and NO public hospital charges NZ citizens to stay there. We have a system that treats everyone equally, not just health care for the rich.
This is why we pay taxes so the government provides you with the health care you need..

    Re: overthere

LOL, congrats to Overthere for the most ignorant post on the internet today. The reason hospitals charge so much you DOPE, is beacuse of leach lawyer like obama and john Edwards. Also, illegals and downtrodden not paying for the hospital stays. MORONS like you actually thought obmama was going to fix this. WRONG!! He basically made the lower middle class pay for all these people to get his really rich friends even richer. Steal from the poor to give to the rich. Every democrat knows this, quit making us look like irrational dumbasses.

    As Al Jolson said,
    You aint heard nothing yet
Wait until ObamaCare goes full gear, you wont be able to find a hospital to treat you
The wait time for a doctor appointment in Boston is currently 71 days
    In Dallas it's only 10
But 10 days can be 9 days too many

Re: Fuckerman – Obamacare insurance stinks. I have a Medicare suipplemnent which is government subsidized and does not cost me a cent.

I am glad I don't have to live in USA. In this particular department at least, USA sucks big time! I wouldn't want to wipe up my ass with this sort of so wildly professed "freedom", when a stupid snake bite would throw me and my family onto the streets, homeless, hungry and with no hope for getting out of this shit hole.
I live in Australia, never have been bitten by a snake in my life, and boy! we have SOME snakes here! Only once by a spider, a bit of a swelling was the end of the whole thing thank goodness. But what are the odds? We have snakes everywhere! AND deadly spiders! When in strife all WE have to worry about is to get to hospital in time to get anti-venom, not if we can afford the fucking thing and if our children will have to face getting orphaned or out cold in the streets! Yes, USA is one of the most oppressive countries (healthcare wise) I've ever come across. Disgrace to the world. Just for this Obama should be sacked long time ago.

Most of the ppl that are on welfare or state aid or any kind of free aid have better health coverage then the ppl that are hard working and have to pay for it. I know a person on state welfare and they can get a top notch med nexium for free every month and I pay hundreds of dollars a month for my health insurance and I can't even get nexium through my insurance company. I guess my tax dollars take better care of others then they take care of me. Only in America.

Re: goldenyearsgal – As to paying through the nose for private cover (special treatment in hospitals, etc.) I pay hundreds a month too, so you are not alone. One thing I've learned, I don't admit that I have private cover (unless I have no other choice) and stay at the hospital (thankfully not that often) as a public patient. No private room, cable TV, and other useless crap, but the care is just as good in most cases. It only gets hairy when one needs a experienced doctor to be taken care by. Looks like this private insurance shit is a total rip off. But if I want to choose a proper doctor to remove my appendix instead of having a med student practicing on me his surgical skills, than I just have to pay for the privilege. Thank goodness I still can.
