Holy shizz, sports fans! We did NOT see this coming!
Well, eventually — but not today!
Like most jobs, they come to an end: either you play long enough to get fired, or you see yourself retiring on a beach somewhere.
Derek Jeter is about to do the latter, because the word on the street is that he's OFFICIALLY RETIRING!
After one more season, that is!
Derek currently does stuff with white balls for the New York Yankees. He's synonymous with the team at this point, so this is a pretty big blow to all his teammates, we're sure!
Here's what he said on Facebook, which doesn't seem like the proper place to announce something like this:
"I could not be more sure. I know it in my heart. The 2014 Season will be my last year playing professional baseball.
"For the last 20 years I've been completely focused on two goals: playing my best and helping the Yankees win. That means that for 365 days a year my every thought and action were geared toward that goal. It's now time for something new."
"I want to soak in every moment of every day this year, so I can remember it for the rest of my life. And most importantly, I want to help the Yankees reach our goal of winning another championship."
Also, he probably wants to play one more year because they made him take a pay cut, but he still wants that $12 million from the 1-year deal he signed for 2014.
Off to greener outfields! It's a tale as old as time!
