This is incredibly sad!
Last night, former President George H.W. Bush was taken by ambulance to Houston Methodist Hospital after experiencing a shortness of breath.
According to spokesman Jim McGrath, George W. Bush's father:

This sounds like the worst, most terrifying thing ever.
Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina screwed up BAD!
Doctors and hospital officials have notified 18 patients that they may have been exposed to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), an incurable neurological disorder.
"Today we are reaching out to 18 neurosurgery patients who were exposed to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease over the last three weeks at Forsyth Medical Center."
Three weeks?? It took them that long to realize they were exposing people to a super serious disease??
CJD is a very rare (one in a million worldwide gets it yearly), degenerative brain disorder. The disease manifests as rapid, progressive dementia, muscular coordination problems, personality changes, impaired memory/thinking as well as impaired vision.
So yeah, it's super awful and must be so so so scary for the patients potentially exposed to this awful disease!
Apparently, a patient with CJD-like symptoms had surgery and later tested positive for the disease. The surgical instruments used were sterilized under normal hospital practices, but that might not be enough.
Normally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and even the World Health Organization recommend the surgical instruments be destroyed or super decontaminated. Thankfully, the hospital is now using an enhanced sterilization process on all their surgical instruments used in brain surgery.
Since there is no easy test for CJD, the patients might not have any answer for a long time, maybe even years.
Years of anxiety about possibly losing your mind and dying sounds almost as bad as the disease itself!!
We really really hope these people are alright!!
