Controversial Ad Campaign In The U.K. Declares "I Wish I Had Breast Cancer" — Find Out Why, HERE!

pancreatic breast cancer ad campaign uk controversy

The idea behind the U.K.'s new controversial new ad campaign is to raise awareness about how awful pancreatic cancer is. It's awful, it has the lowest survival rate, and it's extremely painful.

The ads want to emphasize these points by having pancreatic cancer patients say they wish they had other cancers.

The campaign comes from Pancreatic Cancer Action, and one of the ads shows a 24-year-old woman saying:

"I wish I had breast cancer."

We understand the thought behind this, but all cancers are fucking awful, and we nobody should be comparing them in this way. Breast cancer organizations are outraged, with Breakthrough Breast Cancer CEO Chris Askew saying:

"We can't support any message that suggests that any form of cancer is preferable to any other. Or any inference that breast cancer has been 'solved.'"

It's backlash like this that has made the PCA respond, saying:

All cancer is dreadful and this campaign is not suggesting that anyone's suffering resulting from cancer is worse than another's. It simply expresses the real thoughts and feelings of many pancreatic cancer patients and is something we hear time and time again. Every cancer patient deserves the best chance of survival.

We get it, we just kinda don't by they aren't suggesting that — we bet they knew exactly what kind of controversy they were going to stir up. The kind of triggers they might set off in people who have lost family, friends, lovers, to other kinds of cancer.

It's tough, though. How can anyone call out anyone who is actively trying to raise awareness and save lives? Regardless of their method, the PCA's heart is in the right place.

The PCA said this in a different response:

"With a limited budget, it was vital that the advert would stand out and provoke thought. [It conveys] how it feels to be diagnosed with a disease that leaves you with no hope at all."

Wouldn't the staggeringly awful statistics, bold enough for everyone to see and read, be enough?

Because here they are:

- Only 3% will survive because of late diagnosis
- Most will die in 4 to 6 months
- It's the UK's 5th biggest cancer killer

Shouldn't that be enough to provoke thought, without provoking controversy?

Apparently a 200 percent increase in web traffic — good or bad — means that it worked regardless.

I think it is a brilliant campaign. Such a huge amount of cancer funding goes towards breast cancer & the survival rate is soo much higher. This campaign brings to light so many things.

My dad past away from pancreatic cancer 7 years ago. He was diagnosted in July 2006, stage 4. He past away in April 2007. He kept waiting cause he taught he was just having stomach cramps from being nervous and all but when he turned yellow we pushed him to go to the doctor, by the time he was diagnosted it was too late. The problem with that cancer is that SO many things can cause it that the exact source of yours may never be found. This is a plea from my heart, if you don't feel good in your stomach area, having cramps or anything else, please go see a doctor, it is such a rapid killer…

Re: Oryx – I am so sad to hear that, thanks for posting the info.
In the last year I have lost both my husband's cousin and a BIL to pancreatic cancer, it is apparently a hard one to beat.

Fact is, wouldn't anyone prefer to have a type of cancer with a better survival rate? I don't think for a second it is downplaying breast cancer, and the assertion that it is is some sort of weird attempt at being PC. Any cancer is devastating, but pancreatic cancer is particularly vicious. 5 year survival rate for the lowest stage of breast cancer is 100%. For pancreatic cancer, 14%. Enough said.

  13. 13

I get paid over $87 per hour working from home with 3 kids at home. I never thought I'd be able to do it but my best friend earns over 10k a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The potential with this is endless. Heres what I've been doing, , WORKJURY.COM

  14. 14

I love this campaign! I have always thought that it wasn't right that breast cancer receives so much attention and funding when it is often very treatable. Don't get me wrong….I lost both my parents to cancer and I think they ALL should receive attention and funding. However, I think more attention should be given to cancers like pancreatic cancer and mesothelioma that have almost zero survival rates and are more rare and don't receive as much money for research.

Re: FUCK THE I.R.S – Well good luck with that. I doubt you will be missed or anyone will even notice your absence.

  16. 16

Why not? Breast cancer has the highest survival rate. One of the annoying things about feminists is how sexist breast cancer awareness month actually is. Clearly they want favoritism and special treatment over equality. Not only is more money dumped into women's health care but colon/prostate cancer kills more men than breast cancer does women. Where's men's month dedicated to this? Although more women get breast cancer than men gets colon/prostate cancer it claims many more lives than breast cancer in women.
