This is so incredibly touching!
Sarah Burke was a skier who tragically passed away in 2012, after crashing at the bottom of a superpipe in Utah.
Well, Canadian coach Trennon Paynter wasn’t going to let his trainee miss the Sochi Olympics that she’d been training so hard for.
Paynter brought Sarah’s ashes in a metal container with him all the way to Russia, but he had to get crafty in order to spread them because there were metal detectors everywhere!
Since he’s a coach, Paynter was able to tuck the ashes into his jacket, and then make a few runs down the hill. He explained:
“I managed to poach a couple of pipe laps. I know Sarah wanted to get some hits in the pipe.”
Then, Paynter walked the 100-yard pipe a few times by himself, sprinkling the ashes as went. Finally, he took a gondola ride as high as possible so that Sarah could be there.
The snowboarding team also met up in the Olympic village to pay their respects on one night too.
It’s all so touching how Miz Burke was remembered by those in her community, especially since she was a big part of getting the pipe in the Olympics!
