This is just so terribly sad to hear.
Russian skier Maria Komissarova suffered from a pretty nasty accident during a practice run at the 2014 Sochi Olympics which resulted in a fractured vertebrae in her lower back.
Unfortunately, this has lead to even worse news as she confirmed in a statement on Instagram that she is now paralyzed below the waste.
While the translation is a bit rough, Maria says she's been undergoing operations for the past week and a half, but to no avail. However, she seems surprisingly optimistic and says she knows she'll eventually walk on her feet again.
Maria was recently transferred to a hospital in Munich, Germany where she was visited by Russian president Vladimir Putin, who insists all of her medial bills will be covered by the government.
We're definitely glad to hear she's staying positive despite the devastating accident, and we hope she reaches her goal of getting back on her feet eventually.
