Female Goalie Makes Her Professional Debut In Men's Hockey League! Girl Power!!

femal hockey player makes professional debut in men league

Who says the girls can't hang with the boys???

Shannon Szabados made her professional debut for the Columbus Cottonmouths when she took the net in a matchup against the Knoxville Ice Bears!

So why is this such a big deal?? Because the 27-year-old goalie is a women playing in the men's Southern Professional Hockey League, that's why!!

Shannon recently played on the Canadian national team at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and helped her team win the gold medal! Well apparently the Cottonmouths were so impressed they decided to give her a shot!

Her debut was decent enough as she managed to make 27 saves, however, her team went on to lose 4-3. Keep in mind this was the first game she's played in since the Olympic final which was almost a month ago!!

No female hockey player has ever broken into the NHL, but she did get a shot to workout with the Edmonton Oilers earlier this month!

Who knows. Maybe if she gets a couple of wins under her belt, she could be the first woman ever to break into the league!!

Not true. Manon Rhéaume played for the Tampa Bay Lightning, an NHL team, in 1992. She only played in 2 exhibition games but still, it was the NHL.
