We all know that eating fruit is obviously really good for your health, but have you ever wondered about the benefits of sniffing fruit???
What's wrong with you?? Apparently it can be just as good for you!
A group of scientist conducted an interesting experiment to see if smells could affect our decisions on what we eat. The idea was pretty simple: 115 men and women aged from 18 to 50 and split them into two groups.
One group was unknowingly put in a room that smelled of fresh pears while the other room smelled like average, ordinary room. Then, the subjects were given a few meals — both healthy and non-healthy options.
Scientist noticed an interesting trend that most of the participants in the pear-smelling room went with the healthier apple compote option for dessert while more than half of the people from the other room went with the chocolate brownie instead!
So what does this all mean? Well the theory is our appetites can be curbed by stimuli that we aren't even aware of. Simply put, the group in the scented room gravitated towards the healthier fruit option because they were smelling pears the whole time!
Wow! We guess next time we're craving a super unhealthy dessert we'll just sniff the nearest apple and see if it changes our minds!
