Patrick Dempsey's mother Amanda passed away at the age of 79 after a long battle with ovarian cancer.
The Grey's Anatomy actor's mom had fought hard against the disease multiple times since 1997, but she died earlier this week on Monday surrounded by her family and loved ones.
Amanda's medical struggles inspired Patrick and his two sisters, Alicia and Mary to team up with Central Maine Medical Center and create The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing, which celebrates its sixth anniversary this year.
President and CEO of Central Maine Healthcare Peter Chalke released a statement on her death, saying:
"The entire Central Maine Medical family mourns the passing of Amanda Dempsey. Amanda Dempsey was both a great lady and a determined fighter who displayed tremendous courage, class and grace during her long battle with cancer … We will miss Amanda deeply, but we were all blessed by knowing her and being inspired by her life story."
Since opening their doors in 2008, the Dempsey Center has raised more than $5 million to help raise awareness and provide services for warriors like Amanda who have bravely fought this disease.
Our hearts and prayers go out to Patrick and family at this difficult time.
