There's no question that bullying is a very real issue that many kids struggle with everyday of their lives for various reasons. However new research shows that bullying can be just as bad (or arguably, worse) for popular kids than it is for kids who don't "fit in."
While it's definitely true that many kids are targeted by bullies for things that make them different, a sociologist at UC Davis (Bob Faris) was interested in a secondary kind of bullying called "instrumental targeting."
The theory is basically that students are much more likely to pick on someone who is more popular because they see it as an opportunity to climb the social ladder, and his studies seem to back this up.
Bob surveyed more than 4,000 kids in North Carolina and found that popular kids and their friends were targeted at higher rates and also had higher levels of anxiety and depression due to a fear of becoming less popular.
Of course, bullying is a huge issue regardless of where you stand on the social ladder, and it seems clear that something has to be done so kids stop looking at one another as competition.
UPDATE 11:26 PM EST: The Nye County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that an ambulance transported Lamar to the Desert View Hospital in Pahrump, Nevada. Odom was originally going to be taken to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas by helicopter, but due to his height, air transportation was no longer an option.
This is so scary.
On Tuesday, Lamar Odom was found unconscious at Love Ranch South in Pahrump, Nevada. Insiders say the NBAstar had been at the legal brothel since Saturday.
The business' owner, Dennis Hof, said a woman discovered the 35-year-old in his room. He said that when she turned the athlete on his side, there was "mucus-type liquid coming out of his nose and mouth."
The manager supposedly dialed emergency services, and first responders rushed him to a nearby hospital.
The doctors reportedly inserted a tube into his trachea, implying that the basketball player was unable to breathe when he arrived at the facility.
An insider claims Lamar was taking an herbal substitute for Viagra while at Love Ranch South. But the source says he is currently fighting for his life, adding:
"It doesn't look good."
According to reports, Khloé Kardashian's ex is currently receiving more treatment.
Our hearts are with Lamar and everyone affected by this scary situation. Our thoughts are with the sports star and we're hoping he is able to pull through.
