March Madness may have officially brought the college basketball season to an end, but there's still some very exciting news in the world of college sports!
University of Massachusetts Amherst guard Derrick Gordon has come out to officially become the first openly gay athlete in NCAA Division I basketball history!
The trailblazing sophomore made the decision to come out publicly after telling his family and teammates first, who all gave him tons of support, and he says watching fellow athletes like Jason Collins and Michael Sam come out first definitely helped his decision:
"When Jason came back to the league, that's when I started to build a little more confidence about myself. If the NBA can accept him, then everything is going to be fine in my book."
Derrick admits not everyone took the news well at first, as both his father and brother took a little bit of time to come around before giving him their full support! However, he says most of his teammates and friends had a bit of a hunch before he even told them!
It's been so amazing to see more and more athletes coming forward and being open about their sexuality, and hopefully the world of sports will continue to embrace them with open arms!
Way to go, Derrick!
