“My Mom Is HIV Positive” And I’m Doing Something To Help Others - Reveals Grammy Winner!

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are looking to tackle a huge issue by launching their own non-profit campaign!

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have become known for tackling big social issues through their music, but now they're taking a whole new approach to taking down an issue affecting many people around the world.

Ryan Lewis, the producer of the hip hop duo, made a huge announcement that his mother Julie Lewis was diagnosed as being HIV positive back in 1984, after she was unknowingly given HIV positive blood during a transfusion.

Doctor's initially only gave her a few years to live, however, thanks to modern medicine and her strength she managed to survive for 30 years and is still standing to this day! Ryan tells his mother's story on a fundraising page, saying:

"I'd love to tell you about the strongest woman that I know, my mom, Julie Lewis. In 1984, my mom gave birth to my older sister, Teresa. Due to a complicated delivery, she needed a blood transfusion and at that moment, my mom had HIV+ blood put into her body… Thanks to advanced medicine and healthcare available here in the U.S., my mom has lived despite her odds."

In honor of Julie's 30 years of survival, Ryan and Macklemore are teaming up to create the 30/30 Project, an IndieGogo campaign which is looking to raise money and provide affordable healthcare and facilities to those who need it more around the world.

The first goal is to raise $100,000 by May 21st to help build a non-profit health center in Neno District, Malawi. From there, he's looking to build 4 more health centers throughout Kenya and Uganda.

In addition to helping out a great cause, donors have an opportunity to get their hands on different gifts ranging from tote bags and t-shirts to signed Macklemore and Ryan Lewis merchandise.

It's so amazing that Ryan has not only shared his mother's story with the world, but he's also looking to make an impact on a huge issue that has played a big part in his life.

I am interested to know if his father is healthy…as she continued to have two more children after contracting the virus.

That is amazing I work with HIV patients everyday and they are doing great and staying strong and yes people they can do all what we do just need a little more precautions doing so we are so close to a cute so many medications out there to help gyno types are all difrent but we as America stand strong and fight safe sex is always the best sex you don't want to be a 18 year old boy/girl that lost there Virginia to the person they love to find out 6 months later they have HIV I seen it

Re: Lisa – the father and his two siblings are perfectly fine, they did not contract the virus, which seems suspect to me

Re: Lisa – It's really none of our business if the father is healthy. Ryan and his sister were born after she got infected. They had a 25% chance of being born with HIV but both were very lucky not to get infected. She didn't find out she was positive until 1990, six years after being infected. Her kids were 6,4 and 2 at the time.

Re: Dawn – They had a 25% chance of being born with the disease and were lucky enough to not get infected. You can have sex with an HIV positive person and not get infected but it is always a good idea to use protection. She didn't find out she was positive until 1990 when her kids were 6,4 and 2. She was infected in 1984.

So why did his mom continue to have unprotected sex and put her partner and two other babies at risk?

So rather than jump to the conclusion that you are a gay-hater because you want to build a non-profit in Uganda, one of the most vile countries in Africa and in the world when it comes to human rights, particularly women's rights and LGBT rights (because I know you love the gays Mack)…I want to commend you for going to a country where LGBT people need your help the most because their countries are murdering them (:::coughugandacough::::)…keepin' it real
