With Jason Collins coming out last year and Michael Sam being drafted into the NFL, the world of professional sports has made HUGE steps in including the LGBT community!
And now ANOTHER professional league is making progress as the WNBA is starting a new campaign to actively recruit more gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender fans to games!
WNBA President Laurel Richie spoke out about the move and said it was finally time to start showing support for a fan base that's been with them for a LONG time:
"For us it's a celebration of diversity and inclusion and recognition of an audience that has been with us very passionately. This is one of those moments in the 'W' where everybody comes together."
This is AMAZING!!
Team throughout the league will participate in LGBT pride parades and festivals and collaborate with organizations to raise awareness on inclusion in their communities!
There will also be a pride game between the Chicago Sky and the Tulsa Shock on June 22nd, which will be nationally televised!
Brittney Griner is one of a handful of openly gay WNBA players, and she says she'll be wearing rainbow shoes throughout June to show support for the new campaign!
It's been so great to see different leagues including more and more openly gay players over the past year, but it's also important that they don't forget about the fans as well! Way to go, WNBA!
