The Washington Redskins Are REFUSING To Change Their Team Name Even After Today’s Landmark Ruling! Read Their Official Statement HERE!

C’mon, Washington! Could you BE any more stubborn?!?

It seems NOTHING can convince Dan Snyder, the owner of the Washington Redskins, to change his team’s terribly offensive name.

Not only are millions of Americans calling on the NFL squad to swap their name for something else, today the US Patent and Trademark Office canceled ALL of the Redskins’ trademarks after finding the name to be disparaging to Native Americans.

But the organization announced soon after that they will not do away with the well-known name and that today’s decision will have ZERO effect at all on their team!

Their arguments for why they want to keep calling themselves the Redskins are pretty shocking.

You can read the team’s entire official statement…AFTER THE JUMP!!!

We are confident we will prevail once again, and that the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board’s divided ruling will be overturned on appeal. This case is no different than an earlier case, where the Board canceled the Redskins’ trademark registrations, and where a federal district court disagreed and reversed the Board.

As today’s dissenting opinion correctly states, “the same evidence previously found insufficient to support cancellation” here “remains insufficient” and does not support cancellation.

This ruling – which of course we will appeal – simply addresses the team’s federal trademark registrations, and the team will continue to own and be able to protect its marks without the registrations. The registrations will remain effective while the case is on appeal.
When the case first arose more than 20 years ago, a federal judge in the District of Columbia ruled on appeal in favor of the Washington Redskins and their trademark registrations.

As the district court’s ruling made clear in 2003, the evidence ‘is insufficient to conclude that during the relevant time periods the trademark at issue disparaged Native Americans…’ The court continued, ‘The Court concludes that the [Board’s] finding that the marks at issue ‘may disparage’ Native Americans is unsupported by substantial evidence, is logically flawed, and fails to apply the correct legal standard to its own findings of fact.’ Those aren’t my words. That was the court’s conclusion. We are confident that when a district court review’s today’s split decision, it will reach a similar conclusion.

In today’s ruling, the Board’s Marc Bergsman agreed, concluding in his dissenting opinion:
'It is astounding that the petitioners did not submit any evidence regarding the Native American population during the relevant time frame, nor did they introduce any evidence or argument as to what comprises a substantial composite of that population thereby leaving it to the majority to make petitioner’s case have some semblance of meaning.'

The evidence in the current claim is virtually identical to the evidence a federal judge decided was insufficient more than ten years ago. We expect the same ultimate outcome here.

this is absolutely ridiculous. Their name has been 'redskins' since they started. It is so annoying that people are coming forward saying it's racist. My school's mascot is a warrior and we've been forced to remove our warrior head from our field and our sign because someone brought up that it was "racist." Everything seems to be racist these days, people are too damn politically correct.

How is the name offensive??? Team names historically have been a tribute to powerful or revered culture groups (Celts, Spartans, warriors, Trojans, vikings, Aztecs, Lautaro, Colo-Colo, Māori, etc etc). I live in a native town and the redskins team shirts are worn with pride! Their iconography is beautiful (as compared to the cartoon Cleveland imagry).

They can keep their name if they want and I hope they do. Nothing wrong with it. Also, this isn't "landmark" anything. It even happened 10 years ago, they sued and got the rights back. Also, it's not even that big of a deal what happened. all you pc lovers need to stfu. enough already. I'm really sick of some of the more outspoken native americans thinking they speak for all of them. THEY DONT. I hope the owner NEVER changes the name.

I agree completely with the 3 people who have commented already, and further more, there is real racism going on everyday in our country and around the world. Focus on the getting falsely charged with a crime or denied a job they're qualified for because of their race instead of petty little shit like this. everybody is just so ready to be offended they go looking for a reason to be.

With high unemployment rate, rampant alcholism and poverty , you would think that this issue would be last thing on their minds. Poor Perez , always on a PC bandwagon who doesn't think it through.

my husband is a native american, my children are also registered Native Americans and we are hard core Redskins fans. My mother in law and her brother (who is one of the heads of our tribe) do not find it offensive. The majority of the people who keep bringing this up aren't even native american. a small group of people are speaking for others. The Redskins have a long history of giving back to the Native American community. The first coach was Native American and the logo was designed by a Native American. and this was not a landmark ruling. disappointed you jumped on bandwagon before finding out history of team and their involvement with the native american community. Hail to the REDSKINS!!

PS Oklahoma means "red people" so why aren't people up in arms to change the name of the state as one writer said if we have to change the redskins name shouldn't oklahoma have to change theirs….

Redskins also is a reference to the scalps of Native Americans taken and paid for under orders of King George II. Yes the term is offensive(blackskins or yellow skins would have been changed long ago), yes they should change it, but what the government did was ridiculous. Let the people decide, this isn't an issue for their involvement.

I hope the owner sticks to his guns and does not change the name but if it comes down to it I would take the team to LA they want a team a call them the White SKins

I think this story basically proves how PC and overly sensitive people have become. 5 years ago no one acknowledged this at all. No one was offended by it, you never heard stories like this about the red skins. This basically proves that people go day to day looking for something to be offended by. Their name isn't offensive and it damn sure isn't racist.

It's just people with sad, boring, uneventful lives looking for something to voice their faux outrage over so they feel important.
