This is incredibly sad!
Last night, former President George H.W. Bush was taken by ambulance to Houston Methodist Hospital after experiencing a shortness of breath.
According to spokesman Jim McGrath, George W. Bush's father:

Joseph Pleban, 23, absolutely loves sports.
You name it, he's probably played it. Extreme sports and regular ones, it doesn't matter, he loves to be active.
So you can imagine how awful it must've been when doctors told him he had a rare bone and joint disease (pigmented villonodular synovitis), and that he'd have non-cancerous tumors causing pain and arthritis in his ankle for the rest of his life.
Joseph chose to lose the foot and live his life as an amputee!
"Over six years I had to give up all of the sports I loved. Although taking my ankle away was a big sacrifice, the change to regain the ability to play those sports again meant it it was a no-brainer. It took me a little while to get past the emotional hurdles. As a way to come to terms with what was happening I decided to capture the journey in pictures."
That journey was him basically fulfilling a bucket list of things to do while he still had a functional left foot.
He did all sorts of things like scuba diving, go-karting, watersliding, paintballing and skydiving! He even got a tattoo of a dotted line with the words "Please cut here," above it! Ha!
Our favorite part is how his sense of humor helped carry him through.
He shared pictures of him coming up with different ways he could lose his leg, like shooting it off with a paintball gun or using a buzz saw on it!
That's kinda morbid but way hilarious.
The surgery was a success and Joseph can't wait to get fitted with a prosthetic so he can start being active again!
We wish him nothing but the best!
