The trophy in Michael Sam’s hands at last night’s ESPYs was the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, an accolade that he proves deserving of more and more each day.
As the first openly gay player in the NFL, Sam has changed the sport forever and has inspired countless people with his story of coming out as who you really are.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson presented Sam with the award. After his name was called, Michael turned to his boyfriend, Vito Cammisano, and kissed him. He then hugged head coach of the St. Louis Rams Jeff Fisher before taking the stage to speak about the honor of winning this award.
Michael’s message was one of strength, telling anyone watching who felt different or less-than to never give up hope in themselves.
"To anyone out there, especially young people, feeling like they don't fit in and will never be accepted, please know this: great things can happen when you have the courage to be yourself.”
Michael spent much of his acceptance speech choking back tears, as were many people sitting in the audience and watching at home, we’re sure.
We couldn’t be prouder of all Michael has done and all he continues to do! Congrats on winning this award, dude. You’ve no doubt earned it!
