The Friend Who Helped Inspire The Man Behind The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Died Tragically Just Hours After He Raised $100,000 For The Cause

corey griffin charity als fundraiser for friend

Oh no, this is so sad.

Hours after Corey Griffin raised $100,000 to fight ALS in honor of his friend, Pete Frates (who was struggling from this debilitating disease), he was found dead because of an ill-conceived diving stunt. Corey was one of the original reasons why the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is taking the world by storm, including all of these celebs participating!

According to police reports, around 2 a.m. on Saturday after the fundraiser, the 27-year-old dove into the water from the "Juice Guys" building on Straight Wharf by the harbor in Nantucket, MA. He floated to the surface and then sank; his body did not surface after that.

An off-duty lifeguard happened to be in the area when the incident occurred and tried to retrieve Corey after his hazardous dive. Unfortunately, it was too late.

Officers tried to resuscitate the young man until the fire department took him to the hospital. Corey was pronounced dead at 3 a.m. at the Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

This is such a terrible incident to have happened and it was definitely unsuspected.

Robert, Corey's father said after the event, the young investor called him to tell his father he was in paradise after the successful fundraiser.

Our thoughts are with Corey's family at this tragic time.

Probably broke his neck. Should've jumped instead of diving. Very sad. T&Ps..

Wow, this is tragic. Nothing good ever happens after 2 am. Hope this wasn't a stupid alcohol related event.
