See, players of the game are encouraged to create characters who engage in all sorts of real life endeavors, including intra-personal relationships and even marriage.
Unfortunately, marriage in Tomodachi Life, as it is in 33 states in this union, can only occur between a man and a woman.
Fans of the game have amazing hearts, though. They recently started a "#Miiequality” campaign and petitioned developers to create an update which would allow for same-sex unions, but the game makers sadly aren't having it. They're rejecting the notion on the bogus grounds that

According to a study conducted at England's Middlesex University — ha! dirty — twenty percent of people admit that they would bang a sexy robot if given the opportunity!
About 2,000 Brits were polled and 46% of them thought technology was progressing too quickly and about half of them thought blah blah blah who cares, but about TWENTY PERCENT of them want to stick their peen in a robot or have a robot peen stuck in them!
One of the participants in the study went so far as to admit:

On Wednesday night at Morrissey's concert in San Jose, the singer was bum rushed by a bunch of fans on stage while he was singing One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell!
While the whole thing started off as a sweet and polite greeting on stage in the middle of his song, granted it's still rude to interrupt a performer while they're singing, but at least these people were nice about it!
Anyway, it was all fun and games until more people started climbing over the stage barriers and fought security to greet Morrissey.
The whole thing did NOT end so well.
