This is kinda crazy!
Okay, so, it's pretty much standard practice for hospitals usually give away free samples of formula to new moms.
The majority of hospitals still do it, but the number is dropping. (This is not the crazy part.)
Researchers think there are two reasons behind the drop; the first is understandable, and the second is kinda creepy.
The most obvious cause for not wanting to give out formula is because hospitals don't want to discourage breast feeding. Formula is just so much easier (though not necessarily cheaper or as healthy) and having it around can be temptation to moms trying to breast feed exclusively.
The second, (this is the crazy part) and more disturbing reason for the drop in formula samples is bribery. Some formula companies only give free formula to hospitals that need it for sick or premature babies on the condition that they give away their samples — and exclusively their samples — to new mothers.
So the hospitals that don't want to make their patients a formula marketing campaign are quitting the samples all together!!
We don't care if you choose to breast feed or use formula. However, we think those guinea pig and sample free hospitals deserve a few snaps!
