Q & A with Perezitos.com hostess with the mostest Amy Malin!
Amy works for top party planing company, True Heart Events, and seems to have all the right ideas for this holiday season!
One Perezcious reader asked amy:
"I was thinking about giving back and donating to a charity this holiday season. Any suggestions on what cause to help?"
This is a great question and something I'm actually asked all the time as I have helped raise tens of millions of dollars for non-profits throughout my career.
You do need to be very careful as you are correct in thinking that there are many charity scams out there. Unfortunately, many individuals and groups pose as non-profits and take in donations for selfish purposes instead of actually making a difference in the community.
A good resource you can use to check out a charity before you decide to donate or volunteer is Charity Navigator. It's a site that rates charities who have 501(c)3 status and are considered a public charity to which all donations are tax exempt. This will help you see how much money the charity makes each year and how much of the money they earn actually goes back to providing programs and services to the people their organization support.
For a more straight forward answer Amy gave us her 3 fave charities:
Children's Hospital Los Angeles:
The work they do to save lives and improve the quality of life for children with terminal and chronic illnesses is nothing short of miraculous. They never turn their back on a child in need.
Wounded Warrior Project:
This incredible non-profit takes care of injured service men and women who are risking their lives every day to fight for our freedom.
Thirsty Girl Films:
They're producing an inspiring documentary entitled "Gwapa" (Beautiful) which is the real-life story that follows two Filipino families and their struggle for a healthy future.
