Perezitos.com health correspondent Ashley Koff, co-author of Mom Energy, is back with a Q&A!

A Perezcious reader asks:

Can I let my kids indulge in treats over the holidays?

Ashley says:

Hey mom, it’s time for a Qualitarian intervention! Over the holidays there may be more treats around. But, if your children are filling up on man-made ingredients the body doesn’t recognize (or recognize easily), that’s not a treat. It’s building a poor foundation. Rather than count allowable fat grams, I recommend a Qualitarian approach to food. Allow your child to choose a treat that is made from ingredients you know will provide them with some nutrition (ideally something organic so it is as chemical-free as possible) – chocolate, nuts, sugar, butter etc. Pay attention to quantity. Good rules of thumb: 15 grams of carbohydrates, 7-15 grams of protein, and 5-10 grams of fat are serving sizes that can help you navigate how much of that Qualitarian treat your son (and you!) can consume at one eating occasion.
