Doesn't surprise us, really.
Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum told a New Hampshire crowd on January 6 that children are better off with a father in prison than being raised by lesbian parents.
UGH. Pretty disgusting. And extremely ignorant.
But research shows that Santorum is soooooo wrong. Psychologist Abbie Goldberg says:
"[Gay parents] tend to be more motivated, more committed than heterosexual parents on average, because they chose to be parents. That translates to greater commitment on average and more involvement."
Gay parents are much more prepared for parenthood as they rarely become parents by accident. Children from gay homes show much greater achievements in social functioning, mental health, and even in their studies.
Author David Brodzinsky focuses on the importance of adopting. He adds:
"When you think about the 114,000 children who are freed for adoption who continue to live in foster care and who are not being readily adopted, the goal is to increase the pool of available, interested and well-trained individuals to parent these children.
Interestingly, we find that a small percentage, but enough to be noteworthy, [of birth mothers] make a conscious decision to place with gay men, so they can be the only mother in their child's life."
And the proof is in the pudding. A 33-year-old man raised by a lesbian mother says:
"I feel I'm a more open, well-rounded person for having been raised in a nontraditional family, and I think those that know me would agree. My mom opened me up to the positive impact of differences in people."
No matter what, there are millions of children who need homes. Gay parents can provide a loving and nurturing home that they otherwise would not have. Who would argue witih this??
