Living green means you want to conserve the earth for our children — but what about our children's children's children?
Teaching your kids the importance of living an eco-friendly lifestyle is SO important!
Perezcious momma Sally in Arizona, works hard to reduce her carbon footprint, and wants to make sure her mini-mees keep up her good work. She asks our all things mommy expert, Amy Malin:
"Hi Amy. My husband and I want to be able to get our kids excited about living a green lifestyle. Any cost effective, fun and easy ideas?"
I think it is fabulous that you want to inspire your children to lead a green lifestyle. Protecting our planet should be a top priority for all of us. Earth Day is around the corner, so I'll share my ten simple ideas on how to live an eco-chic life!
#1. Turn off all the lights and electrical devices and your kids' toys when you are not using them. You'll conserve power and you'll save money on your electrical bill.
#2. Don't leave the sink running when you're brushing your teeth and limit your showers to 5 minutes. You'll be conserving water and you'll save money on your water bill.
#3. Bring your own shopping totes to the grocery store. Some grocery chains event offer discounts or cool incentives if you are an eco-chic shopper.
#4. Bring your own glass containers to store your fresh groceries when you shop for things like nuts, cereals, fish, meat, berries etc. This is an easy way to help cut back on waste created by packaging.
#5. Recycle! Every city in the U.S. has a recycling program so there is no excuse not to recycle all paper, glass and plastic products in your home or office.
#6. Carpool - Save money on gas and save time getting to work when you get to use the faster carpool lane by sharing rides with your co-workers who live close by. Plus, your reducing your carbon footprint.
#7. Walk! Whenever possible walk to where you need to be. Not only is it the most eco-chic form of transportation, but it is also the best for your body as walking provides incredible health benefits. Walking to and from dinner with your family is a fun way to spend time to together and burn off some of the calories from dinner while enjoying nature.
#8. Recycle your Furniture. If you kids have outgrown their crib or toy chest, bring their old stuff to a furniture recycler. They will update your unwanted pieces into things other people will enjoy and this will save your old furniture from sitting in a landfill.
#9. Re:Gift - Babies and Kids outgrow their clothes so quickly, so dress your lil cuties in hand me downs. You'll save a ton of money while helping the Earth out. Our society is unfortunately consumer driven and there is way too much man-made "stuff" sitting in landfills eroding the land. Curb your consumption and re:gift baby and kids clothes.
#10. Plant your own garden of organic fruits, veggies and herbs. This is a really fun activity for the whole family and you'll save money on your grocery bill every month. You'll also be eating your own fresh produce which is the healthiest option.
Make everyday Earth Day!
