Moderate Drinking During Pregnancy Is OK???

One well known rule for women who are preggers is no alcohol allowed! Not one single drop.

New data from Denmark suggests, however, that rule of thumb may not be entirely true. Their research suggests that light to moderate drinking early in pregnancy, up to eight drinks a week, has no effect on intelligence, attention or self-control in children at age 5.

Be forewarned, though. Drinking more heavily WAS associated with measurable negative effects.

Over 1,600 Danish women and their children were researched between 1997 and 2003. The range of different women went from mothers who were nondrinkers to casual, heavy and moderate drinkers.

Children whose mothers had 1-4 or 5-8 drinks per week fared no different than children whose mothers had zero drinks per week. Children whose mothers had 9 or more drinks per week were reported to have lower attention spans.

Here's what the author said:

“Our findings show that low to moderate drinking is not associated with adverse effects on the children aged 5. However, despite these findings, additional large scale studies should be undertaken to further investigate the possible effects.”

Although this is certainly good news for women who slipped and drank once or twice during their pregnancy - we do not recommend any preggers women to start downing beers like they're back in college.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are still the largest known cause of intellectual disability in children!

Even with minimal risk of doing harm to your child with one or two drinks a week - would you even want to take that chance?

The choice is yours.
