Can spanking cause mental illness?
Some parents seem to be on the fence whether spanking their children will have any long term effects on their children's psyche.
Here's what a recent study found:
"Researchers from Canada found that physical punishment (such as slapping, hitting, pushing and shoving) — even without child neglect or physical, sexual or emotional abuse — was linked to mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance abuse and personality disorders."
While it is true that many people who have been spanked can grow up without these problems, there are still some people who have been physically punished and have been affected by those actions for the remainder of their adult lives.
So the question becomes whether one wants to take that risk or not.
We think making kids do chores is about as good a punishment as any - but hey that's just us!
