People like this make us sick.
When Hans Mills was ordered to pay his ex wife $4,000 per month in child support, Mills decided the price was too high and FLED the country to the Philippines.
Here was the e-mail he sent:
“The result of the legal instrument you recently designed and implemented is there’s no possibility of a comfortable life or (secure) retirement for me in Canada at all. Therefore I have left the country to seek greener pastures elsewhere, and will never return. Well done, Einstein. Good luck and goodbye.”
Mills left behind four children who needed a strong father figure. One was a drug addict. One has severe depression. One daughter who has down syndrome.
And a ten year-old son who has cancer.
Here's what the father said in a recent interview:
“I did a terrible, awful thing, because I had no reasonable option. I miss my children terribly. I abandoned Canada, but not my children."
He says this even though he claims he will never pay the child support, or return to his family.
Sounds like abandoning to us, but hey maybe his dictionary is different than ours.
In one heartbreaking story, the ten year-old son received a package from his father after he hadn't heard from his dad in eight months. The son opened up the package to find it contained dried banana chips, cassava chips, caramel popcorn and salted peanuts.
The package had a card that read "Dear Steve, I hope you have a wonderful birthday. Love from Dad.”
Here was the son's response:
“Why would I want this from my deadbeat dad? If he really cared, he’d be here.”
Incredibly sad and incredibly true.
