When Pulitzer Prize winning investigative reporter Maurice Possley's wife Cathleen Falsani bought two round tickets to Africa, Possley did not expect them both to fall in love with a nine-year-old very sick child from Malawi.
But that's exactly what happened.
After jumping through bureaucratic hoops they managed to get the child to the United States, so he could have surgery that would save his life.
At this point they were absolutely in love with the child.
But the strict laws in Malawi prohibited any child from being adopted unless the couple who wanted the child lived in the same country as that child for approximately three years. So the could knew that they had no choice but to prepare the child to go back to his home country.
After failing to meet the residency requirements to adopt a child fro Malawi, the singer went on an international crusade to have the residency laws changed which would allow her to adopt a special 4 year-old girl from Malawi.
The pop star won her appeal in June, 2009.
Who was that little girl?
Why, Mercy, of course!!!
The journalist and his wife say their own adopted child is doing quite well in school, sports, and is even totally fluent in the English language, now.
Yay, Madonna, for not only bringing one child into a better life, but at least two, as well!
And maybe even more!!!
