A woman who apparently did not know she was pregnant and who gave birth in a Walmart toilet before abandoning the baby because she thought the newborn was dead is seeking custody of her child.
The woman's name is April Dawn Halkett.
“There was never any question, once she knew that the baby was alive, that she wanted that child. She is just an ordinary girl in a small town and this was an awful, awful experience for her. The respondent honestly believed that what she had delivered, what she had left behind, was not a live child, but a dead fetus."
The other lawyer responded:
“She failed to do something to ascertain whether or not the baby was alive. And as it turns out, of course, the baby was alive. But she merely looked at the baby. She didn’t touch it. She didn’t pick it up. She didn’t do anything with the baby."
The fact remains that even if she thought the baby had died - why would any decent person leave their deceased child in a Walmart toilet? Wouldn't you want to give them a proper funeral?
And how the heck do you explain that to your child as they grow older?
The awkwardness of that conversation alone would prompt us to not allow this woman to have custody of the baby.
But hey that's just us.
