Almost twenty five years after a five-year-old Etan Patz went missing in New York City, a man named Pedro Hernandez abruptly confessed to doing the crime.
He claimed he lured Patz into his store while Patz was waiting for the school bus, and then suffocated him before dumping his body in a large trash bag.
Hernandez is due in court today and even though he was the one who came forward and admitted the crime, he is expected to plead Not Guilty.
This isn't great news for the New York district attorney's office. Many had expressed their concern at the lack of evidence when they charged Hernandez since their only evidence was Hernandez's word. But with that no longer a sure thing - it seems their evidence has now gone down to zilch.
Some wondered if Hernandez's lawyer would try and take the insanity defense, but his lawyer says the only role that his client's mental health came into effect was Hernandez's confession itself.
Here's what the lawyer said:
"The only part that mental disease plays in this case is its role in the confession."
When examined by court appointed psychiatrists they found Hernandez's IQ to be borderline mentally retarded.
Hernandez confessed he allegedly killed Etan Patz whose parents Etan's parents, Stan and Julie Patz haven't changed their numbers or moved in twenty five years in case their missing son ever returned home.
