Researchers in the Journal Of Family And Marriage have found that spanking your baby may do more harm than good!
According to the research, those swats to the behind of an an infant may only make the terrible twos that much worse! Study co-author Andrea Gromoske says:
"The aim of our study was to investigate whether spanking at age one would be related to greater aggressive behavior, and then whether greater aggressive behavior would be related to greater depressive behavior.
Prior research had indicated that spanking was related to each type of child behavior, but no one had investigated how all of them were interrelated.
It turned out that spanking was directly related to future aggressive behaviors, and that increases in aggressive behaviors were related to increases in depressive behaviors."
So not only might spanking your baby make them more aggressive later on- it could lead to depression down the road? Major bummer! And not just for your baby's bum!
Even proponents of spanking say one year is too young for it! We don't fully know the extent of the damage it can cause, and it's better if we don't find out!
No spanking babies!
