Katie Couric lost her husband to cancer in 1998. Then, less than three years later, her sister also succumbed to the disease.
Now the Today host is finally ready to talk about her losses.
"I remember somebody saying, ‘You’re like the Kennedys.'"
But Katie didn't feel like a Kennedy. She felt more like an alien from another world! She says:
"It’s these parallel universes when someone you love is sick. Your world is this completely foreign place involving radiation and tumor markers. Outside, people are buying sweaters."
But after being on the other side of it, Katie couldn't see the world the same way. Instead, she devoted a great deal of her time to founding the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance.
She's standing strong in the face of her tragedy. She says:
"So many people have been through tragedies. I have become slightly inured.
That doesn’t mean if something else bad happened to me I wouldn’t suffer. It’s just that your threshold for suffering increases."
Katie has raised an estimated $300 million for cancer research, in the hope that others won't have to see the world she had to live in.
