We're SO glad that nobody was hurt!
Deborah Farley was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child along with several other weapons-related charges after she placed a handgun, ammunition, and a flare gun in her child's backpack and forgot to take 'em out!
After her son had already left for school Deborah soon realized her error and zipped off to the school to retrieve her son's book bag.
She signed her son out of class on the pretext that he had a dentist appointment, but then her son told her he had already discovered the gun and had given it to one of his friends!!!
“Thinking his mother was referring to the flare gun he had already given to another youngster in the school and not realizing himself that there was a handgun still in the bottom of his backpack. With that, the mother told the principal, who alerted school safety officers, implemented a lockdown, and located the other boy in one of the school’s second-floor classrooms, where the unloaded Orion flare gun was found in his backpack."
When police searched the bag they found a Phoenix Arms .22 caliber semiautomatic pistol, a magazine with 10 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition, and 14 additional rounds in a plastic bag.
And although we doubt that a seven-year-old could load a gun - it still must've been incredibly worrisome for anyone whose children were at that school to know that weapons were even in the vicinity!
The school's lockdown scared plenty of the other children, too.
Here's what one child said:
“I thought we were going to get killed. We went to the back of the classroom. I hid with my friend behind some computers.”
Another child said:
“They made us turn off the lights and hide behind the teacher’s desk. I almost cried. I was afraid we were going to get shot.”
Thankfully nothing bad happened. But what a traumatic event for those kids!
We're guessing it was most traumatizing for the seven-year-old whose mother was arrested.
Hopefully, his mother will be home soon!
