Teacher Suspended For Playing Gay Marriage-Supporting Music Video!

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayMusic MinuteEducationalMacklemoreLGBT

Performing Arts teacher Sue Johnson was suspended for three days for playing a music video for her class.

Was it a video that glorified violence? Showed nudity? Was it full of graphic language?

Nope- it supported marriage equality.

Ch-ch-check out the video (above) for Same Love by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis to see every controversial moment!

Ms. Johnson chose the video as a performing arts piece to discuss at a student's suggestion. She says:

"I asked him if there were any swear words, any violence. He told me 'no' and I said we could go ahead.

The little boy who brought it was so engaged. One boy raised his hand and said he had an uncle who was gay. Another girl said her aunts were."

Sounds like the video inspired the exact discussion it should have!

But the administration was not happy about it! The principal suspended Ms. Johnson, citing the political and religious stances the song takes!

Later the Superintendent claimed the suspension was due to the fact that she failed to fill out the proper paperwork and not the content.

If that's true, why did they "discuss" the content with her?

We think someone just realized that they punished a teacher for showing a message of love and acceptance- and that it made them look like big homophobic jerks!

Good for the principal. That "teacher" was pushing an agenda, not teaching her class. There's a difference, Perez, sweetie. Maybe you should go back to school…

no where does it say she pushed any agenda–she didnt even pick the video–a student did! Unless this is a private school, she allowed the kids to explore what they believe and have healthy discussions. Good for her! Sounds like she covered her bases by making sure there was no inapropriate content, so now its the principal that is pushing is personal beliefs (or hate) on the rest of the school!

Thats total bullshit what about that teacher Diana Medley who said gay people serve no purpose? she wasn't suspended or fired? the school system is full of shit and that is exactly why I will be home schooling my son and daughter!

Hey asshole we have entire courses and degree programs dedicated to educating about politics and agendas we have now and have had in the past. Our teachers should be inspiring and encouraging our children to think about the world they live in.

Regardless of content, teachers at this level are not to give their opinion in the classroom. Students deserve the right to form their own opinions, without the influence of others. While, I think the principal should have reiterated this to the teacher, the teacher shouldn't have even considered showing the video.

I'm a teacher myself, and, in a classroom of impressionable students, I have no opinion to share. My students need to be able to express themselves, without worrying that I'll disagree and punish them for it.
