17 year old girl commits suicide after being raped and cyberbullied(1)

When is this madness going to stop???

Rehtaeh Parsons, 17 from Nova Scotia attempted to commit suicide last week, and died on Sunday after she was taunted for being raped back in 2011 and then cyberbullied for almost two years.

The craziness happened when Parsons went to a party with a friend when she was only 15. Rehtaeh was reported to have been drinking vodka that night, which made her throw up out of a window and was then unfortunately raped. But what made the occurrence even more horrible was that photos of the teenager were taken while she was being sexually assaulted.

The next day, Parsons admitted that she only remembered segments of the night, but she did recall a guy yelling "take a picture, take a picture,” while the other guy was raping her.

Rehtaeh's mother, Leah Parsons notes that after that night was over and the picture circulated three days later, "everyone [at school] started calling her a slut," and that's when her depression began.

Police were then called in to investigate the crime, but they concluded that the case was a "he said she said," which meant that there wasn't enough evidence to even charge anyone with anything.

RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae said:

"We have to deal in facts and not rumors. We may not be able to go down certain roads because of the tragic circumstance. I feel like the door is always open for people to talk to a police agency."

The Parsons family was also told that the pics were not a criminal issue even though Rehtaeh was underage, so Leah decided to pack up her things and family and moved from Cole Harbour to Halifax in order to try to make her daughter's life better.

But unfortunately for the teenager she was just never left alone.

Leah shared:

"Her friends turned against her, people harassed her, boys she didn’t know started texting her and Facebooking asking her to have sex with them since she had had sex with their friends. It just never stopped. Every text, every negative thing she would read to me. It was hard. She tried and she kept trying.

I think she would have had some satisfaction that it was real [if there were charges], because no one believed her. I think kids today listen to a story and if that’s the most sensational story to go with they jump on that and they don’t care how it hurts other people. It’s just too easy to Facebook and text, to say and do mean things. They just jump with the rest of them."

We're very saddened to hear that cyberbullying is very alive, and only wish that it will stop.

Our condolences go out to the Parsons family.

That's horrible. How come in b.c. the same horrible thing happened to a girl and the cops were able to press charges on the punks who took photos and posted them online. Dosent seem fair.

We in Nova Scotia are absolutely heartsick and shocked at this terrible, sad event. Why do these things keep happening?? A Compassion/Empathy 101 course should be compulsory for every 12yo, across North America. Rehteah had compassion for people and animals, Everyone could have learned so much from her, she won't be forgotten.

My prayers go out to the family as I do know what they are going through. My daughter Chantal Dube passed away also at age 17 on Oct 1,2010 in Orangeville, Ont. It is very hard to deal with a death like this when we know how much bullying hurts an what it can do to our young ones, but it still continues. I myself am still trying to deal with it…..I had to move because of living in such a small town everyone knows everything and was to hard to deal with everything on a daily bases, moved to Nova Scotia somewhere where nobody knew me or my daughter. RIP Rehteah, Chantal and all the other young teens that have been lost to us all.

This is so sad! What a beautiful girl. My sympathies go out to the parents and family of this young woman. I pray that the ones that raped her have justice served to them.

Our systems fail us and our children constantly and yet we never seem to be able to promote improving them. I am adamant that this needs to be the last story like this. I cannot fathom my two young girls coming into this type of society and the fears I have for them can be obliterated in an instant if we can get some change. When I was young I flew straight wherever I was, kids now are never accountable. Parents are oblivious to how serious their kids' behaviour is. Anti-bullying courses are a necessity and parents need t be forced to participate.

and the lame cops and judicial system, let alone the gal's school board, had NO BALLS…imagine had the kid been one of their own…betcha then there'd have been some charges laid big time.

thank god for 'anonymous'…having the guts to act as 'checks and balances' and put some pressure on the cops and judicial system to get their lame asses in gear.

please allow me the honour of saying she did not deserve this torment….i have a son and if he ever did anything like this he better hope the police catch him before me…we bore these children we take resposability…period…the laws have taken away what we as parents should be doing….take the boys out and lash them in public then lock them up…then take the parents and lock them up…" may her light see the the sun….may the waters be her swimming pool…and may they never be a mountain she cant climb"…be in peace child
