If you're thinking to yourself that, wow, if a 15 year old girl can be against a weapon's ban, well then maybe the weapons ban is a bad thing — we'd like to tell you to hold off for a minute!
We ARE very proud of this young girl for having the guts to stand in front of state legislators and speak, but we can't help but think that any 15 year old is highly impressionable and probably has a lot of mouths trying to sway them behind the scenes. Something like this is absolutely poised to go viral!
Her video (above) has been viewed more than 2.5 million times, as she talks about shooting since she was 7 years old and how she's part of the Maryland Rifle Club and Maryland State Rifle and Pistol Association team.
She says things like this:
“Ever since I first learned how to shoot, the issue with gun violence around the nation became clear — guns are not the problem, people are. Purging our society of violence and murder cannot be done by gun control legislation.’’
Agreed that people are absolutely the problem, but the problem gets exacerbated when the problem can easily get assault rifles! We need to fix BOTH the people problem AND the easy gun acquirement problems! This should not be a two-sided issue! We need to work together!
She continues, saying the reforms will restrict the rights of Americans:
“By signing this legislation, you are not signing away gun violence but instead liberating American citizens of our constitutional rights. You are not eliminating guns from society but eliminating our ability to protect our lives, liberty and pursuits of happiness."
Okay, sure. But not really. Nobody's life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness relies on an assault weapon and large magazines. Especially when smaller guns — guns that can still easily protect you if you need a gun to do that — won't be touched.
Maryland went ahead and (correctly) approved a host of restrictions that await the signature of Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley — things like a requirement for prospective gun buyers to be licensed and submit to fingerprinting. They also would ban the sale of 45 semi-automatic weapons including the AR-15.
In the video, she cites an incident in China in which a man stabbed 23 children and an elderly woman on the same day as the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.. She used it as evidence that guns are NOT the problem in mass violence, except they totally are the problem in mass violence that uses guns! If we HAD to have a world with mass violence (we wish we didn't), wouldn't you rather one that had a fewer and far between rate of stabbing violence instead of one that has all the gun violence IN ADDITION to it??
“Guns are not needed for mass murder, and robbing American citizens over rights to own them won’t solve anything.’’
Guns ARE needed for mass murder with the use of guns — which is absolutely a quicker and more efficient way to kill other human beings.
Then she said something that doesn't make much sense at all:
“Achieving stricter gun control laws would obliterate any opportunity I could have had to attend a decent college on a shooting scholarship."
We're sorry, but tighter gun control laws are not closing up the sport. At all. Teams aren't being shut down, you'll still be able to practice and shoot and compete all you want! This makes NO sense. Here's a question or two: Why can't clubs and ranges own these guns and then let their members use them in safe arenas for competition and sport? Why would anyone need to own one?
Honestly, we totally get the feeling that someone is behind her pumping her with these ideas. At 15, like we said, being impressionable is your thing — and has been your thing for years now. Kids are sponges. Growing up in a household that believes this stuff if going to lead to more believing in it.
That being said, we do admire her strength to get up and speak, regardless of what she had to say, as it takes confidence and courage to do so… and it is absolutely her right!
