Boy Scouts Lift Ban On Openly Gay Members, No Such Luck For Scout Leaders!

boy scouts vote allow openly gay members maintain ban on gay adult leaders

It's about time!!

After months of endless debate, the Boy Scouts of America finally voted to allow openly gay scouts to join their ranks!!

Over 60% of the 1,400 person polled think the youth organization should allow all qualified members, regardless of sexual orientation!!

Even though the a large percentage of the organization is run by those affiliated with Mormon and Catholic churches who are, sadly, sometimes unhip to LGBT tolerance, the measure was still able to pass!

The first hard fought battle was won, but plenty of work remains!!

Sadly, the ban has not been lifted on openly gay adult leaders!!

C'mon, guys — sexual orientation should not be a factor when determining which adults are fit to help mold young boys into men!

The Scouts' new policy of tolerance toward all youth goes into effect January 1, 2014.

Read the Boy Scouts of America official statement (below):

For 103 years, the Boy Scouts of America has been a part of the fabric of this nation, with a focus on working together to deliver the nation's foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training.

Based on growing input from within the Scouting family, the BSA leadership chose to conduct an additional review of the organization's long-standing membership policy and its impact on Scouting's mission. This review created an outpouring of feedback from the Scouting family and the American public, from both those who agree with the current policy and those who support a change.

Today, following this review, the most comprehensive listening exercise in Scouting's history the approximate 1,400 voting members of the Boy Scouts of America's National Council approved a resolution to remove the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation alone. The resolution also reinforces that Scouting is a youth program, and any sexual conduct, whether heterosexual or homosexual, by youth of Scouting age is contrary to the virtues of Scouting. A change to the current membership policy for adult leaders was not under consideration; thus, the policy for adults remains in place. The BSA thanks all the national voting members who participated in this process and vote.

This policy change is effective Jan. 1, 2014, allowing the Boy Scouts of America the transition time needed to communicate and implement this policy to its approximately 116,000 Scouting units.

The Boy Scouts of America will not sacrifice its mission, or the youth served by the movement, by allowing the organization to be consumed by a single, divisive, and unresolved societal issue. As the National Executive Committee just completed a lengthy review process, there are no plans for further review on this matter.

While people have different opinions about this policy, we can all agree that kids are better off when they are in Scouting. Going forward, our Scouting family will continue to focus on reaching and serving youth in order to help them grow into good, strong citizens. America's youth need Scouting, and by focusing on the goals that unite us, we can continue to accomplish incredible things for young people and the communities we serve.

LMAO Tolerance, except you bully people who don't accept your style of thinking. Just like the boy scouts, right or wrong as a private group they can say who can and can't join. I guess I'm going to have to start bullying the National Negro College Fund now!

Tolerance? All though Catholic religion does not agree with a gay lifestyle it is a requirement of the religion to be tolerant of others who our different. The GLTB community is the most intolerant and bullying of any organization. If they do not get there way they immediate invoke name calling and bullying. People/Groups should be free to have their own opinion and not be chastised for it.

Bottom line - the boy scouts has decided to continue to discriminate. Yes, it is their right, blah, blah, blah - but they have made a conscious decision to discriminate based on sexual orientation.

Openly gay Youth……come on seriously? How many times do you think 8 yrs old are asked about their sexual preference? These are children, can we not just let them grow up without all this political corrrectness bullshit? You damaging the children, and these groups have no right to do this. Sexual preference and children in the same line, is perverted, so can we just stop all this crap? Think of the children first for once, instead of your sick agendas.

so sad that they didn't stay their ground…i respected them for their traditional standards. i don't know but feels like homosexuality is contagious. I keep seeing more and more gays around. I think a lot of these people are just mentally ill and become perverts for lack of guidance

These organizations should accept anybody yes, but since when is scouts or any organization like this all about sexual preference? It's not, it's about earning badges, wildnerness stuff, safety and just fun things for the children, it's a bit ridiculous that every event and all that turns into a topic of sexual preference when the event itself has nothing to do with that topic in the first place.

You just have to give props to Fox News for keeping ignorance relevant. If it wasnt for them, a large portion of America would have to stop judging people based on fear of the unknown and some imaginary dude in the sky.

Re: Canada Girl – just so u know… this issue was brought up becuz a teenage boy scout who was openly gay was denied being made an eagle scout based on his sexual orientation. it had nothing 2 do with younger boy scouts. boy scouts r not just 4 elementary aged boys.
