I think this is a crock of shite and an excuse for their regular Betty Ford type martinis in the late afternoon. They certainly do not look like they have MS, glaucoma, or serious medical conditions. These jerks make people who can really benefit from cannabis-not get it in their own state. Sad.

Better a stoned parent than a parent zoned out on prescription narcotics.

Well better then it's better than having mommy drinking two glasses or bottles of wine….why does no one criticize those mom's…

  6. 6

It's not like they're smoking around their kids, it's clearly a "book club" type of thing where these women get together and use cannabis which lasts for a few HOURS and they can go back to caring for their kids and doing what they need to do. It's almost basically legal in California, and no not for medical needs only, legal just as alcohol is legal. Get with the times or get left behind, people.

  7. Patti says – reply to this

Marijuana Moms is not new, for me it gives me more patients to deal with my three year old. Booze isn't any better and I can't tell you the number of moms I know who have their wine and think they are doing great.
    Everything is good in moderation.

  8. Jared Bork says – reply to this

Cherry picked to make Legitimate medical use look like a joke :/ Like always Californians making our whole country look redicules.

  9. 9

The only thing that should be controversial about this is that marijuana is still taboo and illegal without a prescription. Out of all drugs, marijuana is by far the most mild and it doesn't impair you like alcohol or kill your emotions like prescriptions.

  10. 10

Most people are sheep and trust what their government tells them, as witnessed by the first few comments. What's a "crock of shite" is defending the nanny state. The prison system is a business, wake up.

  11. Ceee says – reply to this

Pretty interesting. My take is that if something is so wrong that you need to smoke pot to function, probably better to look at the cause and figure out a way to make changes in our lives to fix the root of the problem rather than using a drug to reduce stress. However, it could be the answer in some cases. I disagree with the idea that pharmaceutical drugs are always bad. After years of dealing with depression, I finally tried Lexapro and I haven't had a problem with it since…and I don't feel like a zombie, I still have emotions and feel like myself, I just don't feel as disconnected from people and hopeless.

Thanks Perez Hilton. We love you and your blog :) Always have. For the record we are all professional business women with grown children. We do not use bongs or smoke. We are all legal patients who use cannabis responsibly. This is a lifestyle choice that is safer than alcohol, tobacco or pharmaceuticals. Just like gay marriage is gaining acceptance with 100% support from us moms, we feel we should have the liberty with our own bodies to medicate responsibly :) We do not drive under the influence.

AS an old Detox/Rehab RN I am happy more media is addressing cannabis. More on the harms of prohibition and the failed trillion dollar drug war is needed. Cannabis should be legal for adults and medical use nation wide. No lethal dose. It has one serious danger; THC T=Trigger H=Happy C=Cop.

As a Survivor and now as a Thriver, Cannabis has both Given me Life and helped me to cope with Life…Alcohol and Other Drugs are open and ready for the taking with little to NO Medicinal value but the value and Medicinal properties of Cannabis have been shown time and time again, Hate all you want and Demonize the Plant if You Wish but even this wont stop this MIRACLE from Saving our Beautiful Planet and each other….Too Much Love in this World and with New and Growing Love expedentially, there is no stopping the END Of Prohibition and with that I Hope the inhibition of those who turn now to the Dangerous and Heartbreaking available Drugs and Alcohol and realise, there is a NATURAL, God Given, PLANT that HEALS!! To Parents and Children Everywhere, Cannabis can bridge the distance between that next Drink and a HUG!!

Re: shaygirl1309 – Actually Cheryl Schuman was a terminal cancer patient who was in hospice at one point. For those who don't understand what that means, it means she was being made as comfortable as possible for her rapidly approaching death. Educate yourselves before slamming people. We ARE moms who are patients because prescription drugs were contributing to our demise. We continue to use cannabis because it keeps us healthy and has saved our lives. We look healthy because cannabis heals.

Way to go for not being afraid to be public. Cannabis has a ton of benefits, and it's about time people realize the propaganda that they are being fed from the opposers is untrue and nothing more than ignorant. Thank you Cheryl, I am just now able to stand up for my rights. My kids are adults, and can't be taken from me for making a natural choice for health benefits.

  18. Simmi says – reply to this

This is funny! i have a head injury which rendered me unemployable 10 years ago. When I drove on prescriptions no one cared, now all of a sudden because I chose to take control of my life I'm awful? Absurd! Are you upset that I don't look like a "patient"? When "patients" who fit your stereotype come out you ignore them. I think it's hilarious that this is what it takes for people to get worked up. But please, by all means, let's have an adult discussion about it. Don't judge us….I don't judge you!

  19. Barb Brisson says – reply to this

You think it's fake, you think you know how people with diseases should act? FYI as a nurse I can tell you that people with chronic symptoms usually don't show outward signs to those who aren't trained. As a person who has chronic pain I can confirm this. The people you see whinning about their conditions are usually in Acute pain and don't know how to handle it. I have seen the greatness of medical marijuana and am a true believer as a nurse. As a patient I can confirm this. Have some compassion folks and before you talk educate yourselves.

That there are those who still believe that cannabis is the "devil's weed" is beyond comprehension — where have these people been living!

Cannabis is one of the most beneficial plants ever put on the face of this planet. Those who do not know that have either been brainwashed by government propaganda or have something to lose if it is legalized or are just too lazy to do their own research.

Do yourselves a favour — read: Marijuana - Gateway to Health: How Cannabis Helps to Prevent Cancer and Alzheimer's Disease (by Clint Werner). I know several people who have put their serious cancers into remission using cannabis extract oils. And, for the record, I am a non-user and I never have used it … why do I advocate? I got off of my butt and did the research and stopped believing the government LIES! And, I worked in the public health field for over 30 years … so I know a little about harm reduction and risk mitigation.

Why is it so accepting to medicate on pharmaceutical cocktails? Every 19 minutes a person dies from overdose of prescription pain killers yet you CAN NOT over dose on cannabis… It is nothing but hippocracy…having been in the medical field for 20 years, I have seen first hand the benefits cannabis has had on patients…in this day and age a responsible person and their doctor should have the right to choose their treatment!

  25. EarthAngel Brandi says – reply to this

Anyone who does not know of the true benefits from this plant, should really do their own research. Waiting to be told by others and forming opinions about things you are truly uneducated about does no one any justice, including yourself. This is a plant that can cure most all diseases and treats many with little to no side effects. Unlike the ones that are sold to you by big pharmaceutical companies. They fight to keep it illegal is about money and power, think about it, the real cure could be grown at your home and not keep you a life long paying customer. It's time to wake up!!

  26. Summer says – reply to this

don't hate. there's nothing wrong with it at all as long as its being used responsibly. and jus because someone isn't crippled doesn't mean they cant benefit from its use. if u don't like it don't do it but don't get your panties in a bunch because others can and do use it responsibly, whether its recreational or medically. now people that use it irresponsibly, that's another story, that's when its ok to jump down their throats, but even then all they are a danger to is cake. so get over it. cannabis has many benefits and uses its not only for severely handicapped and its not bad. so smoke a bowl or shut up. move on to another article if your ignorance is too strong for this one. or better yet go drink your alcohol and down your prescription drugs, or coke or meth, or whatever it is u think is more acceptable than marijuana. at least no one will die or kill or od or start a fight from using marijuana.

Re: Ceee – On one hand you're saying rather than medicate, deal with the root of the problem.. But then you yourself share a positive story about drugs helping you through depression. While you may see all positives with Lexapro, the fact is there can be serious side effects. Glad it's helping you, though. I took it for a couple months and it made me feel off and I started shedding hair. It's definitely not a safe bet for everyone, especially when messing with the brain's chemistry.

Some of you really need to get educated. Marijuana is used in many countries such as Isreal right in their hospitals for pain relief. I had cancer and radiation and marijuana was far superior to prescription drugs. It actually takes away pain without stomach problems, like Vicodin and other opiates can give people. Do you think Anti depressants do not have side effects…just listen to a T.V. Commercial.
If you are against marijuana you should be against liquor, cigs, and 80% of prescription drugs…Now go find out why the government made marijuana illegal against the American Medical Associations recommendation….prejudice against Latinos and Blacks. Read history books or watch the History Channels "Marijuana a Chronic History". Get educated and legalize

  33. Educatedmom says – reply to this

The level of ignorance surrounding cannabis does not surprise me, given the great length the population has been misinformed. The TRUTH is this medicinal plant has far reaching medical benefits, while never having killed a single person. FDA-approved drugs kill someone every minutes in this country. Cannabis is a neuroprotectant, a cardioprotectant, and possesses anti-cancer properties. Our own government has two cannabis patents. As a medical professional with over 25 years experience, I can assure you cancer is big business and big pharma doesnt want you well, there is no profit in that. Do yourself a favor, do you own research, cannabis can cure and prevent cancer, regulate your metabolism, stabilize mood disorders, prevent organ rejection. The most dangerous thing about this plant is the laws against it. Why not be your own hero? How many will suffer because they are too stubborn to realize they fell for the propanganda? Cancer is an epidemic, please educate yourself. Google cannabis and apoptosis videos. You are welcome. Many blessings.

Ok here's out take on the matter.
We don't even consider marijuana a drug. Marijuana is a plant. An herb, if you will. It is in fact, "Life's Perfect Balance" in every aspect of it's existence. There is not a single part of this "plant" that cannot be used for something. It is quite literally the safest substance known to man. It's safer than your house plants (dumb cane can kill your pets), table salt (linked to 2 million deaths per year globally), peanut oil (severe allergic reactions), everything in your medicine cabinet (made by pharmaceutical industry), I could make an argument that it is safer than the water you drink, or safer than sex for Christ's sake! People really need to be educated as to why marijuana was criminalized in the first place. To ban marijuana is to say "God got it wrong, and in 1937, a bunch of corrupt politicians got it right". All the natural benefits of this plant, and we make it a crime and jail our own people for using it? Seriously? Wake up America! We support ALL moms and everyone else for that matter who chooses to use a natural "plant" as part of their lifestyle choice.. Peace…

Keep up the great work ladies , keep spreading the word

Thank you Cheryl Shuman for talking about how cannabis can help moms with mental illnesses or mood disorders too. My Doctor had me on and off prescriptions meds, but the zoned out feeling was worse than my irritability and mood swings. For the past two years, I've been using medicinal cannabis for when I'm feeling "moody", and I instantly feel more balanced and happy! My husband and kids fully support me using cannabis therapy too. Thank you so much Cheryl Shuman for allowing people like me a voice. Go marijuana moms!

Let them puff or digest a natural herb that takes their pain away with no side effects! Listen to any prescription drug commercials lately??? Cheryl Shuman is still alive today bc she believes that marijuana is helping her and the same can be said for many others. I smoke daily and have lower blood pressure, less stress and am more creative/ productive. It's time to drop the stereotypical "pot head" moniker and embrace the fact that time r changing… Will u?

Over time it can lead to heart disease and hyper-tension. It can also hurt when he takes his frustrations out on his family.

Medical MJ can stop the stress. It can help people come back from very dark places within their own minds.

    It does work.

Also in portugal their rate of teenage use of ALL drugs, cannabis, coke, etc., is WAY down since decriminalization - EDUCATE YO' MIND ♥ i love you

  51. James says – reply to this

I could go on about this issue for pages, but the bottom line is:
Most medicinal patients don't get STONED, because they've built a tolerance to that Euphoric effect. The medical value comes from more than that STONED feeling. And even IF the moms WERE getting stoned, the facts don't change. These moms are using it to replace PRESCRIPTION DRUGS the #1 Killer of women in America. Cannabis hasn't had one overdose or death related to it in all of 8-10,000 years of recorded history. A stoned mom is better than a DEAD mom. Trust me, I've had one of each.

Re: Cheryl Shuman – I have known Cheryl for a number of years. She and her organization are to be applauded for what they are doing, not chastised by people that have no scientific clue about the use of marijuana as a safe alternative to alcohol and pharmaceuticals. She is responsible, organized and completely professional. Some of the stuff posted upset me, but this is America. Know this: these are not women who sit around all day and get stoned. They are working professionals' and they are highly motivated to take a stand against the norm. The norm sucks because I can see many people have no idea what they are talking about in some of the posts. These ladies are blazing a trail that few dare run. Standing up to the government and advocating more scientific study and common knowledge uses. I respect her tenacity as a professional working woman and advocate for those to afraid to stand. Thanks.

Also, I have Tourette Syndrome and BECAUSE of my responsible use of Cannabis you can't tell at all when you meet me unless I'm off that particular medication. So guess what? You're not DOCTOR FREAKING HOUSE! Saying "they don't look like they have a serious condition" is the most ridiculous thing you can say! There are a thousand chronic conditions (INCLUDING MS) that you can almost never tell without further diagnostics. So unless you're Sherlock Freaking Holmes, don't judge people and say they don't "look like" chronic suffers. It makes you sound like an idiot and an insensitive ass.

Cannabis can greatly improve the economy: It can drop the unemployment rate and the U-6 down so much more, a medicine for people with many disabilities (my medicine after my motorcycle accident), make the government happy by taxing it to earn USA some money instead of giving money to the black market, and to relieve life stressors. My dissertation for college, and I'm not afraid to voice a SMART economic opinion that I'm sure will be (is) a fact(s).

  56. 56

I am not sure if it's the same person/people posting over and over but if it's not, you are all strong! It's beautiful to see so many people fight for what they believe in and one day things will change! Keep educating those that do not know!

Sheesh..! catch a clue people..!!! clearly you have no idea what pot really does.

Rather than thinking that it gives medical marijuana a bad rep, I am grateful that it could help gain support for legalizing cannabis across the board. The delusion that cannabis is anything but beneficial needs to end and this can only help end the stigma that it is a "drug". Finally, more people are realizing that cannabis is a natural substance that can help a lot of people in a lot of ways - whether it's MS or cancer or being in a bad mood every other Tuesday. I think it's wonderful.

  65. Ihor Mak says – reply to this

This is puzzling, if your doctor prescribes pharmaceuticals, society accepts his decision but If you change to a differenmt treatment, for some reason that is taboo. How many people die from legal drugs? thousands die. If cannabis works, it should be our right and we should have the freedom to chose the therapy that works best for us. I know that big pharma doesnot like it but unfortunately, Big Pharma, you stuff DOES NOT WORK and it kills people.

  67. 67

Pot doesn't make you violent like alcohol and pot doesn't make you pass out if you take painkillers. Both are easily available. If it came down to it, a person who smokes pot and watches a kid is a lot worse than alcohol/painkillers.

Yes people you can drive, work, watch after children while under the influence of weed. Now not everyone experiences it the same so..

How many of Americans are going to die this year from legal drugs prescribed by their Doctors? Too damn many, thats how many. Never in the history of cannabis has man died from it's use and or effects. The Chinese used it as a medicine as early as 2500 bc. Our forefathers grew a nation with the fiber from the indian hemp they encouraged every American to grow. Cannabis was scrapped as a fiber when Dupont, Mellon and Hurst used the media to vilify and prohibit this fiber source for the new chemicals that make fiber, chemicals to fertilize and kill pests on cotton. Do you think the pharmaceutical giants want to give up any money to anything a novice gardener can produce?

I've seen "moms" use alcohol around their kids then stop paying attention to them, seen "moms" use pills like they're candy and then they can't even button their own shirts let alone care for their children properly. Medical marijuana is not only safe, natural and more effective than prescription drugs but with all the strains out there these days you can find ones that will lift you up when you need it, as well as help others sleep or eat all with out harmful side effects. Pharmaceuticals can't claim that, many pills out there cover up one thing while causing problems in other areas and most will give you cancers later in life. I chose natural every time over chemical… no different than choosing organic options for your foods. This is a plant that has amazing healing properties, to claim otherwise only shows lack of education and ignorance and really a refusal to acknowledge the truth. Sad country we live in…

I've said some stuff about the Eff Dee Ay that never gets printed on here and we all know why.But don't you ever wonder why the DEADLY drug, cigarette, is allowed, a drug Proven to make you sick and kill you, and you don't even have to use it yourself, but weed isn't allowed? I intake one version of it (hemp oil, milk, seeds, icecream). And the other plant, don't remember if it's the male or female, but the one people smoke. The oil from those leaves, can'assist' ccancer patients. Maybe some people don't like the idea of us healing ourselves. Just saying.

Ever 19 minutes someone accidentally DIES from prescribed medications approved by the FDA! ~ WAKE UP AMERICA~ Refer madness is just that….. MADNESS!! Your co-payments and life long contract with Big Pharma is what it comes down to! Google Victims of the War on Marijuana or read about a little boy named Cashy Hyde, or the writer Peter McWilliams and tell me that Medical Cannabis is a lie and is NOT SAFER. As of TODAY~ I know of NO KNOWN DEATH associated by Cannabis overdose , you can't say that about a Baby aspirin or Tylenol or Advil or …….As a former health care worker now medically disabled mostly due to damages done by Pharmaceutical, prescribed medications and someone who has lost patient's to accidental overdose, I challenge you all you educate yourselves!

Takes the edge off your stress without any of the adverse side effects of pharmaceutical 'medications' ~ evens out your 'bumpy road' on any given day. These moms don't 'wake and bake', but medicate responsibly whenever they feel the need, making them better moms for their children by helping them cope with whatever daily stresses and issues need to be handled. I've known both types of moms ~ the ones on Prozac, and the ones ~ like myself ~ who choose the safer alternative. Great job, Cheryl and friends <3

If you have ever watched a family go through bouts of depression, (because no matter who actual is depressed, the whole family unit is affected) it clearly effects relationships with everyone including children.

If a child would rather have their mother present with them, better a little high than locked in a room, or locked on the couch with with a bag of pharmaceuticals.

Have you ever read the possible side affects of prescribed anti-depressants, one of them is "thoughts of committing suicide". more people are dying from prescribed pharmaceuticals than most illegal drugs combined.

People who spend their lives condemming other people who are trying improve their lives, need to get a real life. If this is working for those people who use it, who are we to do Gods job. I believe that Cannabis is a gift from God or it wouldn't be here.

These woman are so stupid. This Shuman lady is an idiot. She keeps saying in her interviews that SHE is the "Martha Stewart of Marijuana" What a moron. Looks like she is just trying to cash in on this biz. If you read her bio she's a publicist and what better way to try to make yourself "famous" than pick a topic that people want to discuss and try to get recognized for it. This is embarrassing for the pot movement.

Re: They are awful! – People can benefit from Cannabis even without serious medical conditions! And the greatest benefit is a mental/spiritual uplifting that reveals your true higher self.

Re: Jared Bork – Medical Marijuana is a joke only because its use shouldn't be limited to just "medical" reasons. It is time to realize that there is nothing wrong with getting high and legalize.

I believe cannabis should be regulated so that it can have the same amount of social stigma as alcohol. If people feel free to drink in front of their kids there is no reason they should not be allowed to consume cannabis. Alcohol is more dangerous then cannabis and so a safer alternative should be available for adults.

Re: Ceee – That's something many people worry about. But what they need to know is that Cannabis actually DOES help fix the root of the problem. It works deep within your psyche and allows you access parts of your true self. This is why people connect with other people so much better when high. The key is to take what you learn from being high and apply it to your normal state of consciousness.

And there is nothing wrong on "relying" on something or "using" something to help fix a problem. We use cars to get us from point A to B, we use coffee when we're sleepy, we wear clothes when we're cold, etc, etc. Why does Cannabis always have to be singled out as some sort of taboo thing?

If you have anything to say negative about these brave women, there are thousand more of us out there that are also willing to discuss the benefit of marijuana. I myself can attest to it,yet my fight against Prohibition stems more to the harms we are causing in our communities. We are locking up 800,000 people per year and then they have a Scarlet letter for the remainder of their lives. Over 70,000 people, the majority of them innocent citizens, have died on our border with Mexico. It is time to wake up America. Prohibition of this plant has cause far more harm to society than the plant ever could. Let's provide safe access for patients and adults and get it out of our kids schools. Face it they can get it easier than us adults.

It's clear that everyone, EVERYONE, on here making comments about cannabis being horrible is just following what the good ol' govt. tells them and not doing their own due diligence before they comment. Well, I have only one more thing to say: research the bodies endocannabinoid system, then maybe you'll begin to touch the tip of the iceberg on just how had you've been. Research for yourselves, I know every single one that's making negative comments has not. Because if you had, you wouldn't make such stupid remarks.

I am not a mom but have been a cannabis user for 31 years. I am not on any pharmaceuticals (at 45 years of age) and I attribute that to how utterly healthy cannabis has made me. Would I recommend anybody start as early as I did? NO!

14 is too young in my view for anything mind altering (unless there is a medical need for it) but it didn't negatively impact me regardless and has not impeded me in any way.

The fact that not a single person has ever died in all of recorded history should tell you that cannabis is even safer than water.

Re: Jared BorkRe: Meghan – Agreed Meghan, also sometimes cannabis helps those around the patient - in the case of my extremely difficult mom, when she consumed it she would get laid back and far less demanding and controlling. It made her tolerable.

Re: Jared Bork – Haha! If you think California is crazy, then stay OUT OF CALIFORNIA! If you do not agree wit the medicinal uses of marijuana, then for God's sake, DO NOT USE MARIJUANA! Easy as that! Or are you just the type who just like to criticize everyone and every place else? And I am guessing you do not believe in gay marriage as well! And I say, DO NOT MARRY YOUR OWN SEX. Now, wasn't that easy.

Re: donna – Well said, thank you. Alcohol can be such an ugly DRUG! But because it's legal, nobody wants to consider it a drug. I would have preferred having my parents smoke then drink, and drink and drink and argue and argue and argue…any day! But their gen was "reefer madness" gen. Until our government re-classes pot…away from hardcore drugs, it will stay illegal. And as long as alcohol makes $…..
