Michael Douglas Explains Reference To Son During Emmys Speech!

michael douglas explains reference to son during emmys speech

So that's what it was all about!

Michael Douglas had a very memorable speech after he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie!

He not only thanked his wife Catherine Zeta Jones, but the Behind The Candelabra actor made a reference to his son Cameron at the end of it when he said he was "hoping they allow me to see him soon."

A lot of people were curious just what Michael meant, and the actor went into further detail later on in the evening.

Here's what he said:

"Well, my son is in federal prison based upon -– he's been a drug addict for a large part of his life and was arrested and selling drugs and is in federal prison. And part of their punishments if you happen to have a slip -– this is for a prisoner who is nonviolent — as about a half a million of our drug addicted prisoners are, they punish you. So for my son's case, he's spent almost 2 years in solitary confinement and right now I'm being told that I cannot see him for two years."

This would cause any parent some serious emotional distress, and Michael is no exception!

In fact the actor has been wielding his celebrity power lately to try and see why he hasn't been able to see his son for so long.

He continued:

"It's over a year now and I'm questioning the system. Obviously, at first, I was certainly disappointed with my son, but I've reached a point now where I'm very very disappointed with the system and, as you can see, from what [U.S.] Attorney General Eric Holder has been doing — and other issues regarding our prison system — I think things are going to be revived regarding nonviolent drug addicts/criminals. My last comment on that is the United States represents 5 percent of the world's population and we have 25 percent of the world's prisoners."

There's definitely an abundance of prisoners in the United States, and it is definitely a very big problem!

We hope Michael Douglas is able to make some changes, and we also hope he's able to see his son soon!

No parent should be away from their child for that long! Hang in there, Michael!

Boo snot cry cry, your son had numerous chances at rehab, more than anyone else would have, and he blew them all. Cameron Douglas decided a life of drugs and drug dealing was the way to go and thought that, because he's a rich kid, who would get away with it, he got exactly what he deserved.

His son may well have caused the untimely deaths of many…he is exactly where he belongs and the possibility that he may be free one day is appalling.

that is awful not being able to see them for 2 years is a bit effed up u would think the punishment is in the actual being locked up not in the not seeing someone u know for 2 whole years that is crazy..

It's a messed up situation but Michael Douglas has a point. He is talking about the law in general, not just for his son - no privileges here. Canada's judicial system would have Mr. Douglas not even speaking out at all.

Not sorry to read about this, his son chose to deal dope, and a deadly one at that. As someone who lost a brother at age 52 to a heart attack that my sister and I are positive was caused by overuse of crystal meth (which weakens the heart) I have no sympathy.

Totally don't condone drug usage or sales but solitary confinement for a non violent offence seems a bit excessive!! Surely there must be a better way to rehabilitate them instead so they don't reoffend when released.
