A gay high school teacher at Holy Ghost Preparatory Schol in Bensalem, Pennsylvania was fired after the school found out he was applying for a marriage license in his home state of New Jersey.
Michael Griffin was a teacher at the Catholic school for 12 years where he taught French and Spanish, and was also an alumni.
The professor was shocked about his firing considering he was always open about his relationship, however the school claimed the license was a breach of his "teaching contract."
Michael was obviously upset with the school's decision and took to Facebook to share his disappointment:
"Today I applied for a marriage license since NJ now has marriage equality. After 12 years together I was excited to finally be able to marry my partner. Because of that, I was fired from Holy Ghost Preparatory School today. I am an alumnus of the school and have taught there for 12 years. I feel hurt, saddened, betrayed and except for this post, am at a loss for words."
Michael goes on to say that he was particularly hurt since many of his fellow employees had met his partner and they had attended each other's functions:
"My partner came to school functions with me and a school administrator attended the ceremony after our civil union in 2008. I even asked the president if it’d be ok to bring him to a holiday party at his home very early on in my teaching career."
The professor noted that the school has a handbook which includes the Teacher’s Code of Conduct, and he believes he was fired because his lifestyle wasn't "compatible with the moral teaching of the Roman Catholic Church."
Sadly, Holy Ghost's decision is technically legal as the state of Pennsylvania has yet to pass anti-discrimination laws for sexual orientation.
It's absolutely disgusting to see that people are STILL being mistreated simply because of who they choose to love, especially considering it's 2013!! This is NOT ok!!
