Amazing Young Girl Petitions American Girl Dolls To Make Doll With Disabilities!

| Filed under: InspirationBusiness BlitzHealthCute Kidz

melissa american girl doll petition

The American Girl dolls are cute and empowering, and they come in all different races and colors… but they don't have one category that could really use that kind of support.

We're talking about a doll that's disabled, one that young disabled children are able to relate to — and that's exactly what Melissa Shang and her Change.org petition are all about.

At 10 years old, Melissa is wise beyond her years, and she also has Charcot-Marie-Tooth… a form of muscular dystrophy. If you just listen to her for less than 60 seconds, you'll know exactly why she — and others with disabilities — deserve a new kind of doll.

Here's a taste of what she says:

When I was seven, like most of my classmates, I fell in love with American Girl dolls—historical and modern girls with stories about overcoming obstacles…

Of all the American Girl dolls, my favorites are the Girl of the Years. Every year, American Girl introduces a brand-new character with a story about finding success in the face of challenges today. Girls of the Year come from all different places, from Hawaii to New Mexico, and they help girls learn what it’s like to be someone else… Girls of the Year have helped me understand how it feels to be someone else.

However, none of the American Girl Girls of the Year are like me. None of them have a disability.

She then opens out emotional floodgates, and all we want in this world is for her to succeed in everything she does!

We think it's so important for toy creators to listen and make toys for ALL kids. Relating to and loving something that's special enough to become a doll — and it has a disability like you, well, we'd say that would be an incredible thing.

Note to self: never create a doll company. Stick wtih the path of entrepreneurship you are going. People in general are using toy companies to make political and social agenda and gender statements. Can we go back to the days when females just played with their fuckin dolls and loved it and our moms would scream "keep it down in there"…. "ken and barbie are fighting"…."tape their mouths""? Can we go back to the days when females were actually strong and didnt give a shit and were content and when they got their skinny white barbie for xmas.. they jumped up 10 feet in the air and fluttered around the room? Can we go back to when females were successful at not giving a shiit? I'm sorry for all kids with serious disorders. I will gladly donate money towards the research of this disorder.

Those dolls are expensive! Looked into getting one for my graddaughter about 3 years ago and at the time they were about $100 - and then there are the clothes. Gosh if I spent that much, not sure I would want a doll in a wheelchair, but good luck to her.

Will someone take this little girl to any of the major city's China Towns; they all have MANGLED Chinese dolls for sale; she can even get a brand new one and RIP THE ARMS OFF if she likes.

Have her call up Marie Osmond & MAKE A WISH; all of Marie's doll look retarded & since none of them move…quadriplegic too.

I don't want to sound insensitive to this child's issues, but aren't ALL dolls disabled? They cannot walk, most do not have knees or elbows that bend, they can't think, speak, hear or see. The person who plays with them can pretend that these dolls are real children who can do all those things that most children can do. A child can also pretend that the doll has whatever condition or physical or mental challenge the child has or that the doll deals with some other condition. Imagination is a big part of doll play. I think AG used to sell a wheelchair for their dolls. Maybe they can solve this particular complaint by writing a book about one of their doll characters facing a physical or mental challenge. Any creative people out there who could make that happen? I bet there are.

American Girl's 2012 doll of the year was a gymnast with a learning disability and her best friend(who was made into a doll) was in a wheelchair. On the website, dolls can be ordered to come with wheelchairs or hearing aids, can even be made to not have hair for little girls who have cancer, and AG has even made allergy-free lunch bags for the dolls with food allergies.

While there has been no handicapable doll of the year, AG has taken many steps towards allowing children to make their own doll to be just like them.

Hopefully most of the commenters on this site are sterile and unable to have children because holy crap, you are a despicable bunch.

They definitely do have dolls with disabilities and the dolls are completely customizable as someone else said. I've seen them at the AG store.
