Mayim Bialik Defends Breastfeeding In Public! Do You Agree With Her Statement On Breasts Doing Their Thang?

| Filed under: FamilyCeleb KidzPerezcious Parenting

mayim bialik breastfeeding is not a sexual act

This mother isn't backing down from her convictions!

Former Blossom actress and current The Big Bang Theory star Mayim Bialik is a proponent of attachment parenting, and also is fighting for her right to breastfeed in public!

And although she's weaned her four-year-old son Fred from her own milk - she still remembers the awfulness from when she was still breastfeeding him.

One incident she vividly remembers was when Mayim was breastfeeding her then three-year-old son on a New York City subway - an event that prompted an extreme amount of backlash for Mayim.

Here's what she said:

"I received a tremendous amount of backlash. What I like to point out is that was the best way for that subway ride to be pleasant for everyone. It was the end of a very long day. That was not a weak moment of parenting but a conscious decision of, 'I have the best way to make this child happy and content right now."

Although Mayim believes there is nothing wrong with breastfeeding in public - she also never wanted to make people uncomfortable if she could help it. She said:

"When I was nursing, I didn't feel the need to be immodest, but I also feel like that's going to vary from woman to woman. I would try to be absolutely respectful and conscious of the community I was in. But I don't believe you need to cover up a baby eating anymore than you need to cover a baby drinking a bottle."

One reason why Mayim believes she did receive so much backlash is because of the current culture and its "bizarre" relationship with breasts. She said:

"Our culture has a very, very bizarre relationship with breasts. Breastfeeding is not a sexual act. It's an intimate act, and that makes some people uncomfortable, but it's completely normal to have all of the human hormones that are released when you breastfeed regulating your relationship with your child."

To each their own, right?

If people really have a problem with someone breastfeeding on a city subway - they can always look away, or leave the subway train.

Whether or not one agrees with Mayim's parenting values is kind of inconsequential!

I don't see anything wrong with breast feeding in public. If you don't like it, turn your head. What's ridiculous is wearing a dress up to your ears because of your religion, but you can whip a boob out on the subway. Don't get that…hmmm

I can't even believe that nursing is an issue. The issue shouldn't be about breasts, that child is hungry, that child should be fed. End of story. Feed the baby.
Besides, who doesn't love seeing a surprise boob? If it bothers you, look away. Problem solved. A screeching child is a lot more offensive to deal with than a mother nursing her babe. North America needs to get over this like yesterday.

  3. 3

Maybe, just maybe it wasn't the breastfeeding itself, but the fact that she was breastfeeding a THREE YEAR OLD?

North America needs to get over it. How offensive, a breast being used for what is is intended for. It's a simple problem. Baby is hungry, feed baby. Problem solved. The issue shouldn't be about seeing breasts, it should be about feeding babies. If boobs offend you, look away.

whatever, mayim. you're weird. and annoying. especially in your latest appearance on bill maher.

  6. 6

Who cares about the breastfeeding in public, but why was he 3 and still breastfeeding?

  7. 7

She is right - we are bombarded by sexualized images of breasts all the time, but for some reason people can't handle seeing them used to feed a child.

    Re: michellt

Bring up someone's religion when it has absolutely nothing to do with the story… hmm, don't get that

  9. 9

I think she got it wrong. People did not get upset because she was breastfeeding but because her child was 3 years old.

I agree with her. Breasts have a specific function and that's to nurse/feed young human mammals; and it's not what current society has turned it into, which has weirdly been marketed to become strictly titillation to snag a male. Other cultures nurse to the age of 7 and think NOTHING of it as it is normalized. Normal is THEM, not us.

  11. BrianT says – reply to this

Its natural to pee and poop and have sex but we don't/aren't allowed to do that in public. There are other alternatives now so you don't have to breast feed in public. And I would love to ask her if its natural to live in a million dollar mansion like she does when people are starving and homeless.

  12. 12

Re: Krisha07 – Thanks I did not pick up on that. Where I used to work, you got six weeks paid maternity leave, after than you were on your own, time off with no pay.
I agree with covering it up, we took another younger couple and their young son with us to an expensive restaurant. She covered her breasts and the lighting was discreet so no one else noticed. Don't think whipping out your tatas in public is in good taste.

HE WAS THREE!! If he was hungry, you pull out some vegan cookies for him to eat or you give him a sippy cup of your pumped breast-milk.

Re: sophie58 – I think it was because he was so old. If he had been 3 months old I'm guessing she would have gotten zero backlash. The fact that the kid was three and probably took it upon himself to lift her blouse and start sucking on his own is what probably caused the backlash.

  15. Charlie says – reply to this

Re: BrianT – Sorry Brian, but comparing breast feeding to peeing, pooping, and having sex is more than a little insane; breast feeding in not an indecent act. A child needs to be fed, and the breast is NOT a sexual organ. I would much rather see a mother modestly nursing her baby, than see a little girl with her tits hanging out.
People have very skewed views on what is appropriate, and what is not. If you don't want to see a woman feed her hungry child, then I suggest you move or avert your eyes.
As for breast feeding a three year old; well I can understand why some people would be uncomfortable with that, I might feel uncomfortable as well…but that is because of the society that we live in, not because it is wrong.

  16. 16

    Re: BrianT

You're a freakin' dumb-shit. You equate breast feeding with urinating and having a bowel-movement? How old are you? So tell me in your mind, where should a mother feed her child? What are the other alternatives?

And for the rest of you judgmental people how/why is it any of your business how long a mother breast feeds her child? a Mothers milk is the most nutritious milk there is, loaded with vitamins and minerals.

  17. Taz says – reply to this

It was'nt the fact she was breastfeeding in public,it was because she was breastfeeding a THREE year old in publuc. That is offensive in itself and totally inappropriate for that age.
I believe in breastfeeding a baby but not a CHILD.

  18. L says – reply to this

Breasts are still considered sexual I wouldn't want prevs looking at my breasts. I'd use a cover up. That's why they make them. To each their own on that. BF a 3 year old? LOL well he is going to have mommy issues, I'm guessing when he starts dating no one will measure up to his mommy. She'll prob hate everyone he dates.

  19. chumbasa says – reply to this

No & yes !!! Yes, the child has to eat but NO I don't want and should I have to see you big sloppy breast in a restaurants . Place a baby blanket over the baby and yourself, keep it a private bonding moment between the two of you! People complaining where's our rights ?? With all do respect, where are mine ? when I'm paying 100.00 to enjoy a meal and got to see this. I'm all for breast feeding but there's a time and place for everything !!! I breast feed, I also went out restaurant.. PUMP and GO ! I'm entitle to my opinion !! This is to the lady who thought it was okay this weekend to remove her breast from her bra then reach for the baby….

  21. Lola says – reply to this

Yes the baby should be breast fed but let's get real here a 3 year old is not a baby - it is now a child who should be eating all solids as their main source of nutrition. At 3 or 4 years old breastfeeding is no longer the main source of food - it is like a snack?! So she could have given a snack or some pumped milk….the fact that she has no problem doing that on the subway just shows the strength of her character and confirms she is very eccentric..but than again they say most highly intelligent people are borderline crazy - going off topic.

  22. Hannah says – reply to this

I do believe that breastfeeding is ok in public but I also believe throw a blanket over the babies head. I don't need to see it. It is a natural and beautiful thing but it is not appropriate in some cases to take out your breast. But she doesn't realize the problem was she was breastfeeding a child not a baby! A 3 year old child should not be breastfed!

  23. 23

A 3 yr old has TEETH is able to chew and should be eating SOLID food! end of story!

  24. 24

Re: BlueIris – Didn't ask you to get it. It was my thoughts and I'm entitled. So there mo fo!

  25. lindseylo says – reply to this

This is just ridiculous. What the hell are breasts for? BREASTFEEDING!! people is this country are so stupid i could scream. Every single thing offends everyone, if you don't like it don't look!!! And as for breastfeeding a 3 yr old, mind your business. people are feeding their children CRAP food and its ok? but bf isn't? so annoying.

Re: Taz – It is recommended that children be breastfed thru the age of four. In many other countries the normal stop age is seven. Our society needs to stop being so judgmental of mothers who are giving their children the best nutrition out there, regardless of age!

Re: chumbasa – a lot of breastfed babies do not take bottles. I wouldn't tell you to cover up your food or to eat somewhere else so you have no right to tell a child that. I would rather see a mom breast feeding than a lot of the barley dressed women while I eat.

  30. ValLynn says – reply to this

For those of you wondering why a mother would nurse her 3 yr old, maybe you should EDUCATE yourself on the benefits of breastfeeding. Many countries nurse their children til they are 5! Breast milk always has been and always will be the best nutrition for a child. It is not unusual to nurse a 3 yr old. Which would you prefer, milk from a cow filled with antibiotics and hormones or breast milk that comes from the mother which is biologically designed for that child? Nursing in public uncovered, covered, whatever, should not matter to anyone. A baby is hungry they need to eat. And NO a mother should NOT have to nurse her child in a bathroom, or anywhere that an adult wouldn't eat their food in. I for one would not want to be covered up eating or eating next to a toilet. The public needs to grow up and get over it. Breast milk is best, always has been and always will be.

  33. Fiona says – reply to this

I didn't realize that Subway cars are now baby buffets… It's a private thing, I don't want to look at someone whipping out their private parts for any reason. When i have to go to bathroom I go to bathroom, I don't just make it my business no matter where I am, same with breastfeeding, this whole "then don't look or get off the train" thing is redonk, ikke excuse me, YOU get off then and take your kid with you.

  34. Fiona says – reply to this

    Re: ValLynn

Human babies start to loose the ability to break the "glue" in the milk once they are 3 years old, so there is really no need to keep breastfeeding them, if anything they can develop allergies as it starts to ferment in the intestines.

  35. bye says – reply to this

If it's normal in other countries to BF in public and until age 7 then maybe she should move there. Good bye. Regardless of what anyone says boobs are used for two things..Food and sex. I don't need to go out in public and see some lady whip her tits out. Use a god damn cover up it's not hard to throw a blanket over you or pump milk into bottles. There are too many perverts out there to even want to do this with out a cover. She is an advocate for a lot of things. Doesn't mean she needs to shove it in everyone's face. Maybe she should go live somewhere where you can walk around nude, only eat vegan food and make your own soap. Her kid is going to have issues.

  36. 36

All the women in my family breasfed their children. We were sensitive to the feelings of others when we breastfed in public and went to the ladies lounge or covered ourselves with a thin baby blanket. It is an intimate moment between mother and child and not everyone is comfortable with it yet. Let's be sensitive to others when in public and breastfeeding, a wonderful mother-child experience, will eventually become as accepted as it was centuries ago.

  37. AJVR says – reply to this

How fantastic! Good for you doing what is best for your child!

  38. @v@ says – reply to this

Re: Franidani123 – They do eat solid food. Nursing is supplemental, and the benefits are too many to list. If people are uncomfortable with nursing, it's THEIR issue.
not the mother or child's, who by virtue of common sense and warm blooded mammal-ness
rank higher on the academic scale.

  39. EuroGirrl says – reply to this

Enough! Yes its natural, however there is a thing called a breast pump so that you can feed the baby in public. I think the issue is not that its sexual but the fact that people seem to have no modesty anymore, I dont want to see breast feeding in public anymore than I want to see someone drop their pants, show a thong , or anything else. I dont know you and dont need to see your body parts.

  40. Lee says – reply to this

I'm with Mayim, breasts have a function, and that is to feed our young. Not to sell cars or beer or clothes.
Brian you retard, don't you dare compare using the bathroom or sex with breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is eating, not a bloody sexual act!!!

  41. US of Puritania says – reply to this

Why does milk have to be coming out of breasts for it to be ok for women to take them out in public? (especially at a beach). Us men can take off our shirts and show our broken nozzles. I see no problem with women going topless on a hot sweltering day of lounging in a park. No thirsty infant required. But seriously, public breastfeeding is NEVER going to be accepted in american culture. Americans are too prudish to the core. Cant even handle college girls showing their bellies in cut t-shirts without throwing a hissy. You telling me that a country of women who get enraged at college girls dressing skimpy can handle a nation of college girls breastfeeding? NAH. Just pump it and bottle it. Thats the best compromise you can wish for in the United States of Puritania

  42. US of Puritania says – reply to this

I can see parallels between breastfeeding and "pooping and pissing". All of those are life sustaining bodily functions. If a baby dont eat.. it dies. If a baby dont poop.. it dies. If a baby dont pee… it dies. But… babies are allowed to poop and pee in public. So why not eat in public? Women who arent allowed to publicly breastfeed, breastfeed their babies in public bathrooms where people poop and pee. Breastfeeding has been shown to be yet another method of increasing IQ in children. Every IQ point counts. I wouldnt want the memory of dangling from my moms udders, so women should stop breastfeeding before the kid's ability to remember things develops AT LEAST.

  43. US of Puritania says – reply to this

Re: Krisha07 – Breastfeeding in an extended manner has more proven advantages in the medical and intellectual development of children than disadvantages. The list of advantages scientist have discovered is quite impressive. If I remembered them, I'd list them. But google is your friend. If science meant anything to our culture…. all women would breastfeed in an extended manner beyond where women typically quit breastfeeding.

  44. 44

Re: US of Puritania – I'm a mother, I breast fed my daughter for 12 months and somehow was able to do this in public discreetly, not even hiding myself or my baby, just not pulling out my breast and then doing a million other things before putting my baby to it. As for the age, it's your right to feed your child your milk for as long as you want, but use a fucking cup!!! Three years old is too old to be sucking it straight out of your breast!

  45. Maudlin says – reply to this

Mayim needs to wax those eyebrows. :)

  46. Amaryllis says – reply to this

She should do that at home. And what was she thinking breastfeeding a three year old in public? Give him something in a sippy cup.

  47. Laura says – reply to this

Re: Taz – First of all, at three years of age, breast milk is not the main source of food. If the child is hungry have some granola bars, juice boxes etc. in you bag. Whether we like it or not, breasts are sexual in our culture. People who breastfeed in public like to say it is the NATURAL way. Wel,l as some others have indicated bowel movements, urinating, intercourse and even menstruation are also natural. But we tend to those needs in a private place. If it is indeed necessary you can breastfeed in a public place but for the comfort of other people, toss a shawl or blanket over the dairy bar.
