Teenage Girl Suing Her Parents For College Tuition! The Verdict Is In!!

teenage girl sues parents for college tuition and loses

Remember the 18-year-old girl who sued her parents because they refused to pay her college tuition??

Well it looks like Rachel Canning might have to start looking into student loans, as the court ended up ruling in favor or her mom and pops, saying they won't have to pay a DIME for her school, her legal fees, or child support payments!

Judge Peter Bogaard spoke out about his decision, saying ruling in favor of Rachel could have potentially opened Pandora's box:

"We have to ask ourselves, do we want to establish a precedent where parents live in constant fear of enforcing the basic rules of the house. If they set a rule a child doesn’t like, the child can move out, move in with another family, seek child support, cars, cell phone and a few hundred grand to go to college. Are we going to open the gates for 12-year-olds to sue for an Xbox? For 13-year-olds to sue for an iPhone? We should be mindful of a potentially slippery slope."

That's actually a REALLY good point!

Just because Rachel doesn't agree to her parents' rules does NOT mean she's entitled to money, and if she would have won this lawsuit, we have a feeling a LOT more cases like this would start popping up any time a child disagrees with their parents!

Besides, there are PLENTY of students out there who are able to make it through college with help from student loans, so we're sure she'll figure something out!

Wow. She is really entitled. Try getting a college loan and a job like everyone else.

  2. 2

Not to mention if she wants all that paid for all she has to do is move back in with them. Her father already stated the door was always open. She's just a spoiled, entitled little girl that's in for a rude awakening if she thinks that's how life works.

It's all in how people are raised & what they grow up believing is a normal way of thinking. If you had parents that acted as if you could do no wrong, that's what you're going to believe. & the way people see things/understand things, tends to be a life long thing. If you haven't learned to think for yourself & reason things through at a young age, you may end up being that way for life.

here's the thing, you need your parents to even get student loans in the first place. You need your parents to fill out the faftsa forms until you are 24 years old. If the court system wants to take parents out of paying for their childrens' educations then they need to take the parents out of the faftsa filing. Really wonky and messed up system.

Idk how's she's entitled to her parents money who worked there asses off for.. How bout she counts the money it took to raise her? Or the sacrifices they made to give her a gd up bringing….Did she really think her parents had a obligation to the luxuries she's wanted? It's called a job n being responsible n independent that's wat ur supposed to do wen u turn 18. It considered an adult….If she didn't like her parents rules that's fine move out but don't expect ur parents to still take of u cuz u thought u was grown…if ur grown enough to move out cuz u didn't want to live by rules ur grown to make ur own way…she had no right to put her family thru this cuz of her being selfish and greedy….she's definitely ungrateful n ugly for doing wat she did…n look wat happened cuz of her stupidity she lost…that's wat she gets God don't like ugly….ur not supposed to go against ur parents for selfish reasons

the little witch is hot in the ass. she wants to be "grown", but needs mommy and daddy to front the bills. she's a self-entitled brat and I'm glad the judge shut her ass down.

Thank the good Lord that the judge could see how terrible this could have been. If you are old enough to vote, move out, be a adult in the eyes of the law at the age of 18. Then you are old enough to pay for your own damn college just like me and everyone else I know! Parents are to love, give shelter and provide the basic needs to children. If they can do more and want to, that is wonderful! After this stint, her parents are going to think long and hard about trusting their daughter at all.

Basically: "I wanna be an adult but mom and dad need to pay for everything and I want it all my way." Real life is going to kick this girl hard in the ass.
She had a roof over her head and a good HS education. There are so many people don't even have that. Apply for some loans and get a job like many college students have to do.

The attorney who took the case should also be reprimanded by the court for filing the case…

I am sorry but i agree with her it should be the parents responsibility IF they can afford it to pay for higher education for the children they brought into life. She did not ask to be born and as such it should be those that brought the child into this life to make sure it gets the highest amount of education possible.

The obvious has been covered already. The vast majority doesn't like her attitude, and neither do I. Going further, how tough is her skin? Because she's going to need thick skin to go back to her school and put up with all the taunting and jeers she would receive if she had won that case. Or in the event she gets a loan and wants to return. Miss cheerleader, will be seen as Miss Biach! And rightfully so. And only the dumbest most desperate guys will want to date her as she's stinking worse than spoiled milk now.

I saw her mom on video crying in the courtroom because the girl she raised and cared for just threw her and her father away as if they didn't exist, and then sued them in a court for money that she didn't earn. Cold as ice and just as greedy. I hope she has an epiphany along with a change of heart for the two people who loved her until, moves home, changes her attitude, and helps them out. They don't look that young on top of it, so anything could happen. I hope she tries to become a good daughter who makes her parents proud instead of their hell on earth.

Re: wonky – First of all it's called FAFSA. And second you only need your parents if they are supporting you financially. If you get your own job and are paying for your housing and stuff then you can get loans on your own, without your parents. As long as you're not living with your parents or on their dime you can get loans on your own.

this girl chose to move out and shun her parents because they asked her to be a functioning member of their NOT HER household

They owe her nothing, college is not a basic human right, it is not a guarantee.

All she needs is a little respect for her parents and some doses of reality. Too dam spoilt. If she cant follow her parents rule well she is saying she is an adult so adults take care of themselves.

Welcome to the real world kid. If you cant live by basic rules that your parents give you then you have the right to move out. What you dont have the right to is act lile a spoilt brat and expect your parents to pay for a lifestyle you arent entitled to. Thankgod the judge had the good sense to nip this ridiculous claim in the bud. My advice to you is get off your arse and look for a job. Life isnt all about people paying for your life that you think you are entitled to. Shame on you. Get a life.

  19. 19

Ha Ha Ha - Get a job! I hope when she gets one it is low level and low pay to teach her something she really needs to learn. ON the job I hope she gets treated like shit! This entitled little bitch make me sick - even just seeing her snotty face makes me want to hurl

  20. 20

I hope someday she has a kid just like her - wait no - worse

Smart judge, he got that one right. Children today don't want to work for anything and feel that they are entitled to everything.

    23

Student loans are unethical. It's a bad investment.

I'm not saying the judge should have ruled in her favor, but quit touting loans as the perfect solution to everything. All they do is get you in debt- and these days a college education doesn't mean squat in the job market.

Why don't you study harder and apply for scholarships, Rachel?

This girl has a really cute face and a nice body. Its not like she cant just go seduce some upperclass guy. She's a total "TILF". "Trophy I'd like to fawn-over".
By the time my mom was a year older than her… she was , for all intents and purposes, wealthy already. Just owed to her taste in men. thanks to my dad's having groomed her for business ownership for 3 decades.. she now employs an army of "strong independent women" who would have told her to "make her own money, gold digger" back in the day. This girl has the same goods to land wealthier men.. unless she really is truly a drunkard as has been suggested. If she's a drunkard, she would be a bad influence on males until she fixes that problem. As for "paying for her college". Its a western tradition for parents to pay for their kids college education. A LONG HELD TRADITION. I dont think its spoiled at all on her part. If you breed… you educate your babies. Thats the way modern society works.

Who ever even heard of parents using college tuition as a weapon? I get that they want her to "obey their rules" and "break up with her boyfriend" (nobody wants their daughter or sisters dating losers. Losers are for other people's daughters) but i've never heard of parents going "if you dont obey our rules…. F your college". Thats a first on my end.

Re: jc – Just because they gave her a good life and stuff that does not mean she needs to sue. They set rules and if she does not want to follow them then she needs to leave and don't expect them to pay for her stuff. Just like everyone her is saying she is a spoiled brat and this lawsuit is unnecessary.

She is an entitled brat. She wants to be a grown up? Then be a grown up. Accept the responsibilities that come with it and stand up on her own two feet.
